Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

When the Muslims camped at Badr and the polytheists advanced, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked toward Utba bin Rabia, who was on a red-colored mound, and said, "If there is any good among these people, it is with the man on the red camel. If they obey him, they will be rightly guided."Utba was saying, "My people, listen to me concerning these men. If you fight them, this matter will linger in your hearts forever, every man looking at the killer of his brother or the killer of his father. Lay the cowardice on my head and turn back."Abu Jahl said, "By Allah, his lungs have swelled with fear at the sight of Muhammad and his companions. Muhammad and his companions are no more than a meal for a slaughtered camel, once we meet them in battle."Utba replied, "You will soon find out who the coward is, the one ruining his people. By Allah, I see a force that will strike you down. Do you not see that their heads are like vipers and their faces like swords?"Then he called for his brother and his son, and walked out between them, and called for single combat.
