He said to the Prophet ﷺ, "What benefit did you bring to your uncle? He used to protect you and grow angry on your behalf."He replied, "He is in a shallow layer of fire. Were it not for me, he would be in the lowest depths of the Fire."
أنه قال للنبي ﷺ: ما أغنيت عن عمك، فإنه كان يحوطك ويغضب لك. قال: هو في ضحضاح من نار، ولولا أنا لكان فى الدرك الأسفل من النار.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Merits (3883), and Muslim in the Book of Faith (209), both from the hadith of Sufyan, who said, Abdul-Malik narrated to us, Abdullah bin Harith narrated to us, Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib narrated to us, and he mentioned it.In another version, "I found him in the depths of the Fire, so I brought him out to a dahdah." A dahdah is shallow water on the surface of the ground reaching up to about the ankles, meaning he is in the Fire up to his ankles, and were it not for me, he would have been in the lowest depth of the Fire, that is, the very bottom of Hell and its furthest depths.
