Masruq reported,

We were sitting with Abdullah while he lay reclining among us. A man came to him and said, "Abu Abdul-Rahman, there is a storyteller at the gates of Kindah who tells stories and claims that the sign of the smoke will come and seize the breath of the disbelievers, while the believers will suffer from it only something like a head cold."Abdullah sat up angrily and said, "People, fear Allah. Whoever among you knows something, let him speak according to what he knows, and whoever does not know, let him say, 'Allah knows best.' For it is more learned of any one of you to say about what he does not know, 'Allah knows best.' Allah said to His Prophet ﷺ, "Say, I ask of you no payment for it, nor am I one to pretend what I am not" [Sad 38:86].When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw the people turning away, he said, "Allah, send seven years like the seven years of Yusuf." So a year of famine took hold of them that stripped away everything, until they ate hides and carrion out of hunger. One of them would look up at the sky and see something like smoke.Abu Sufyan came to him and said, "Muhammad, you came commanding obedience to Allah and the keeping of family ties, and now your people are perishing. So pray to Allah for them."Allah, the Exalted, said, "So watch for the day when the sky will bring a visible smoke, enveloping the people. This is a painful punishment" [Dukhan 44:10–11], up to His words, "Indeed, you will return" [Dukhan 44:15].Abdullah then said, "Will the punishment of the Hereafter be lifted? The day We seize with the great seizure, indeed We will take retribution. The seizure was the day of Badr. So the sign of the smoke, the seizure, the binding punishment, and the sign of the Romans have all already passed."

عن مسروق قال

كنا عند عبد الله جلوسا وهو مضطجع بيننا. فأتاه رجل فقال: يا أبا عبد الرحمن! إن قاصا عند أبواب كندة يقص ويزعم أن آية الدخان تجيء فتأخذ بأنفاس الكفار. ويأخذ المؤمنين منه كهيئة الزكام، فقال عبد الله وجلس وهو غضبان: يا أيها الناس! اتقوا الله من علم منكم شيئا فليقل بما يعلم. ومن لم يعلم فليقل: الله أعلم؟ فإنه أعلم لأحدكم أن يقول لما لا يعلم: الله أعلم. فإن الله عز وجل قال النبيه ﷺ: {قل مآ أسلكم عليه من أجر ومآ أنا من المتكلفين} [ص: ٨٦] إن رسول الله ﷺ لما رأى من الناس إدبارا. فقال: اللهم سبع كسبع يوسف قال: فأخذتهم سنة حصت كل شيء حتى أكلوا الجلود والميتة من الجوع. وينظر إلى السماء أحدهم فيرى كهيئة الدخان. فأتاه أبو سفيان فقال: يا محمد! إنك جنت تأمر بطاعة الله وبصلة الرحم. وإن قومك قد هلكوا. فادع الله لهم. قال الله تعالى: {فارتقب يوم تأتي السمآء بدخان مبين يغشى الناس هذا عذاب أليم} [الدخان: ١٠- ١١] إلى قوله: {إنكم عائدون} [ الدخان: ١٥] قال: أفيكشف عذاب الآخرة؟ يوم نبطش البطشة الكبرى إنا منتقمون. فالبطشة يوم بدر. وقد مضت آية الدخان والبطشة واللزام، وآية الروم.
