When this verse was revealed, "And warn your closest kin" [Shuara 26:214], along with the words "and your sincere kinsfolk among them," the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out and climbed Safa, where he raised a cry of alarm. The people asked, "Who is that calling out?"Others answered, "Muhammad."So they gathered around him, and he called, "Sons of so-and-so! Sons of so-and-so! Sons of so-and-so! Sons of Abd Manaf! Sons of Abdul-Muttalib!"They gathered around him, and he said, "Tell me, if I informed you that a cavalry force was coming out from the foot of this mountain, would you believe me?"They said, "We have never known you to lie."He said, "Then I am a warner to you before a severe punishment."Abu Lahab said, "Ruin to you! Did you gather us for nothing but this?"Then this surah was revealed, "Perish the hands of Abu Lahab, and perish he" [Masad 111:1], Surah Masad. That is how Amash recited it, to the end of the surah.
