Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl set out for Syria seeking and inquiring about religion to follow. He met a Jewish scholar and asked him about their religion, saying, "I may well embrace your religion, so tell me about it."The scholar replied, "You cannot follow our religion unless you take your share of Allah's wrath."Zayd said, "It is from Allah's wrath that I am fleeing. I will never bear any portion of Allah's wrath, and how could I endure it? Can you guide me to something else?"The scholar said, "I know of nothing except that you become a Hanif."Zayd asked, "And what is a Hanif?"He answered, "The religion of Ibrahim. He was neither a Jew nor a Christian, and he worshipped none but Allah."So Zayd departed and met a Christian scholar, and mentioned the same thing to him.The Christian said, "You cannot follow our religion unless you take your share of Allah's curse."Zayd replied, "It is from Allah's curse that I am fleeing. I will never bear any portion of Allah's curse or His wrath, and how could I endure it? Can you guide me to something else?"He said, "I know of nothing except that you become a Hanif."Zayd asked, "And what is a Hanif?"He answered, "The religion of Ibrahim. He was neither a Jew nor a Christian, and he worshipped none but Allah."When Zayd heard what they said about Ibrahim , he left. Once he was out in the open, he raised his hands and said, "O Allah, I bear witness that I am upon the religion of Ibrahim."
Bukhari narrated it in al-Manaqib (3827), saying, Musa said, "Salim bin Abdullah told me," and I do not know him except that he narrated it from Ibn Umar, and he mentioned it.I say, its chain is connected to what came before it, which is, from Muhammad bin Abu Bakr, who said, Fudayl bin Sulayman told us, who said, Musa told us, and he mentioned it.He used to prostrate to Allah, the Exalted, while on his mount, and he died five years before the Prophet's ﷺ mission according to the correct and preferred view. Whoever says that he was a companion has erred. He used to wait for the Prophet to appear from the descendants of Ismail, so that he could confirm him and believe in him.
