Salama said, "We had a Jewish neighbor among the Banu Abd al-Ashhal. Shortly before the Prophet ﷺ was sent, he came out from his house one day and stopped by the gathering of Banu Abd al-Ashhal."Salama continued, "I was the youngest person there at the time, lying on a cloak in the courtyard of my family's home. He spoke about the resurrection, the Day of Judgment, the reckoning, the scales, paradise, and hellfire. He was addressing a people of polytheism, idol worshippers who did not believe that any resurrection would occur after death."They said to him, "Woe to you, so-and-so. Do you really think this will happen, that people will be resurrected after their death to a realm containing paradise and hellfire, where they will be recompensed according to their deeds?"He replied, "Yes, by Him whom one swears by. A man would gladly accept, in exchange for his share of that fire, the largest oven in this world, heated to its hottest, then be placed inside it and have it sealed shut over him, just to escape that fire on the morrow."They asked him, "Woe to you, what is the sign of that?"He said, "A prophet who will be sent from the direction of these lands," and he gestured with his hand toward Mecca and Yemen. They asked, "When do you expect to see him?"He looked at me, since I was the youngest among them, and said, "If this boy lives out his natural lifespan, he will witness him."Salama said, "By Allah, the days and nights had not passed before Allah Most High sent His Messenger ﷺ, while that man was still alive among us. We believed in him, but the Jewish neighbor disbelieved out of envy and spite."We said to him, "Woe to you, so-and-so. Are you not the one who told us about him what you told us?"He said, "Yes, but he is not the one."
Ahmad (15841), Tabarani in al-Kabir (7/47), Hakim (3/417–418), and Bayhaqi in al-Dalail (2/78) all narrated it through the route of Muhammad bin Ishaq, and it is found in Sirat bin Hisham (1/212). He said, Salih bin Ibrahim bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf narrated to me, from Mahmud bin Labeed, brother of Banu Abdul-Ashhal, from Salama bin Salamah bin Waqsh, who related it.Hakim said, Sahih according to the criterion of Muslim. I say, its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ishaq, for his hadith is hasan when he states his source explicitly. Salama bin Salamah bin Waqsh was among the people of the First and Second Aqabah, and he was present at Badr and the battles that followed it.
