A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "How did your story begin, Messenger of Allah?"He said, "My foster mother was from Banu Saad bin Bakr. I went out with her son among some young lambs of ours, and we had not taken any provisions with us. I said, 'Brother, go and bring us some food from our mother.' My brother went off and I stayed with the lambs. Then two white birds came forward, as though they were eagles. One of them said to the other, 'Is this him?' The other replied, 'Yes.' They rushed toward me, seized me, and laid me on my back. They split open my belly, then took out my heart and split it open, removing from it two black clots. One of them said to the other, in Yazid's version of the narration, 'Bring me some snow water,' and they washed my insides with it. Then he said, 'Bring me some cold water,' and they washed my heart with it. Then he said, 'Bring me tranquility,' and he sprinkled it into my heart. Then one said to the other, 'Stitch it up.' So he stitched it and sealed it with the seal of prophethood.Haywa added in his narration, 'Place him in one scale and place a thousand of his community in the other scale.' I looked up at the thousand above me, fearing that some of them might fall on me. He said, 'Even if his entire community were weighed against him, he would outweigh them.'Then they departed and left me, and I ran off in great fright. I went to my foster mother and told her what had happened to me. She feared that something evil had befallen me and said, 'I seek refuge in Allah for you.' She prepared a camel of hers and placed me on the saddle, then mounted behind me until we reached my mother. My mother said, 'Have you fulfilled your trust and your responsibility?' Then she told her what had happened to me, but it did not alarm her. She said, 'I once saw a light come out of me by which the palaces of Syria were illuminated.'"
Imam Ahmad (17648), Tabarani in al-Shamiyyin (1181), Hakim (2/616-617), and Bayhaqi in al-Dalail (7/2) all narrated it through the route of Baqiyyah, who said, Buhayr bin Saad told me, from Khalid bin Madan, from Ibn Amr al-Sulami, from Utba bin Abdul-Sulami, who told them that a man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he then related the account.Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criterion of Muslim." Its chain is hasan because of Baqiyyah, for when he narrates from Buhayr bin Saad, even using the formula "an" (from), his narration is accepted, so how much more so when he states the transmission explicitly. As for requiring an explicit statement of hearing at every level of the chain, that is not the established practice.
