The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When Allah created Adam, He wiped his back, and from his back fell every soul He would create from his descendants until the Day of Resurrection. He placed between the eyes of each one of them a glimmer of light. Then He presented them to Adam.Adam asked, 'My Lord, who are these?'He replied, 'These are your descendants.'Adam saw a man among them whose glimmer between the eyes pleased him, so he asked, 'My Lord, who is this?'He replied, 'This is a man from the last of the nations among your descendants, called Dawud.'Adam asked, 'My Lord, how long have You made his lifespan?'He replied, 'Sixty years.'Adam said, 'My Lord, add forty years to his lifespan from my own.'When Adam's lifespan came to an end, the Angel of Death came to him. Adam said, 'Have not forty years of my lifespan remained?'The angel replied, 'Did you not give them to your son Dawud?'So Adam denied it, and his descendants denied. Adam forgot, and his descendants forgot. Adam erred, and his descendants erred."
Tirmidhi (3076) narrated it from Abd bin Humayd, who said, Abu Naeem narrated to us, who said, Hisham bin Saad narrated to us, from Zayd bin Aslam, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned it. Hakim (2/325) graded it sahih and narrated it through the route of Abu Naeem in the same manner. He said, It is sahih according to the criterion of Muslim. It was also narrated from Ibn Abbas as a raised hadith, following the words, "I have granted them to your son Dawud." He said, "I did not do that." So Allah brought forth the document, and the angels bore witness to it, and Adam's lifespan was completed at a thousand years, and Dawud's lifespan was completed at a hundred years. Ibn Saad narrated it in his Tabaqat (1/28), Abu Yaala (2710), Tabarani in Kabir (12/214), and Ibn Abu Shayba (34618), all of them through routes from Hammad bin Salama, who said, Ali bin Zayd narrated to us, from Yusuf bin Mihran, from Ibn Abbas, and he mentioned it. Its chain includes Ali bin Zayd bin Jadan, who is daif.It was also narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The prophet Dawud had intense jealousy, and whenever he went out, the doors would be locked so that no one could enter upon his family until he returned."He said, "One day he went out, and the house was locked. Then his wife came looking into the house, and there was a man standing in the middle of the house. She said to those in the house, 'Where did this man enter the house from? The house is locked. By Allah, you will bring disgrace upon Dawud!' Then Dawud came, and there was the man standing in the middle of the house. Dawud said to him, 'Who are you?' He said, 'I am the one whom kings do not intimidate, and no barrier keeps me out.' Dawud said, 'By Allah, then you must be the angel of death. Welcome to the command of Allah.' So Dawud sank down where he stood, and his soul was taken there, until the matter was finished, and the sun rose upon him. Sulayman said to the birds, 'Shade Dawud.' So the birds shaded him until the earth was darkened over them. Then Sulayman said to them, 'Fold your wings, one by one.'"Imam Ahmad (9432) narrated it from Qutayba, that is, Ibn Saeed, who said, Yaqub bin Abdul-Rahman bin Muhammad, meaning Qari, narrated to us, from Amr bin Abu Amr, from Muttalib, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned it. Muttalib is Ibn Abdullah bin Hantab, who did not hear from Abu Hurairah, so there is a break in the chain. Whoever overlooked this defect graded it sahih.
