Bukhari narrated it in the chapters on the prophets (3372), and Muslim in the book of faith (151, 238), both through the route of Abdullah bin Wahb, who said, Yunus informed me, from Ibn Shihab, from Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman and Saeed bin Musayab, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it.In a wording of Bukhari, "May Allah forgive Lot, he used to take refuge with a strong support." He narrated it in the chapters on the prophets (3375) from Abu Yaman, who said, Shuayb informed us, Abu Zinad related to us from Araj, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it.The meaning of his saying, "I would have answered the caller," is the messenger sent by the king mentioned in the verse, "So when the messenger came to him, he said, 'Go back to your lord and ask him what is the matter with the women who cut their hands. Indeed my Lord is well aware of their scheme'" [Yusuf 12:50].As for his saying, "and we have more right to doubt than Ibrahim," what is meant by it is to negate doubt from Ibrahim and to affirm his strong faith, by attributing doubt to himself, when doubt is in fact denied of him ﷺ without question. What is meant by "support" is the clan and the group.The Prophet ﷺ prayed for mercy upon him for his lapse at the moment his chest was constricted and his distress intensified because of what befell him from his people, so that he said, "or take refuge with a strong support," meaning the clan, when in fact he ought to have taken refuge with the strongest support of all, which is Allah . It is also possible that he had simply forgotten this, then remembered, and so turned in refuge to Allah .
