The first women to wear a waist sash did so following the example of Ismail's mother. She wore a sash in order to hide her tracks from Sarah. Then Ibrahim brought her and her infant son Ismail, whom she was still nursing, and set them down near the House beside a large tree above Zamzam, in the upper part of the masjid. There was no one in Makkah in those days, and there was no water there. He left them in that place, and set beside them a leather bag containing dates and a waterskin containing water. Then Ibrahim turned and walked away.Ismail's mother followed him and said, "Ibrahim, where are you going, leaving us in this valley where there is no human being and nothing at all?"She said this to him again and again, but he would not turn to look at her.Then she said, "Was it Allah who commanded you to do this?""Yes," he answered.She said, "Then He will not abandon us." And she went back.Ibrahim went on until he reached the mountain pass, where they could not see him. There he turned his face toward the House, raised his hands, and prayed with these words, "Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in a valley without cultivation" until he reached "that they may be grateful" [Ibrahim 14:37].Ismail's mother went on nursing Ismail and drinking from that water until what was in the waterskin ran out. Then she grew thirsty, and her son grew thirsty, and she watched him writhing, or he said, tossing about. She walked away because she could not bear to look at him, and she found that Safa was the nearest hill in that land to her. She stood on it, then faced the valley, looking to see whether anyone was there, but she saw no one. She came down from Safa, and when she reached the valley floor she lifted the hem of her garment and ran the run of a person in distress until she had crossed the valley. Then she came to Marwa and stood on it and looked to see whether anyone was there, but she saw no one. She did this seven times.Ibn Abbas said that the Prophet ﷺ said, "That is why people perform the ritual running between them."When she reached the top of Marwa she heard a voice. She said to herself, "Hush." Then she listened hard and heard it again, so she said, "I have heard you. If you have any help, give it."And there was the angel at the place of Zamzam. He dug with his heel, or he said, with his wing, until water appeared. She began to bank it up with her hands, doing like this, and she scooped the water into her waterskin, and it kept welling up after she scooped.Ibn Abbas said that the Prophet ﷺ said, "May Allah have mercy on Ismail's mother. Had she left Zamzam alone," or he said, "had she not scooped up the water, Zamzam would have been a flowing spring."So she drank and nursed her child, and the angel said to her, "Do not fear that you will be lost. This is the House of Allah, which this boy and his father will build, and Allah does not abandon His people."The House stood raised above the ground like a hillock, and the floodwaters would come and cut away at its right and its left. Things went on this way until a party of Jurhum passed by, or a household of Jurhum, coming along the road from Kada. They camped in the lower part of Makkah and saw a bird circling. They said, "This bird must be circling over water. We know this valley, and there was no water in it."So they sent one or two scouts, and there they found the water. They came back and told them about it, and they all came forward. Ismail's mother was at the water, and they said, "Will you permit us to camp beside you?"She said, "Yes, but you have no right to the water."They said, "Agreed."Ibn Abbas said that the Prophet ﷺ said, "This came to Ismail's mother at a time when she longed for human company."So they camped there and sent word to their families, who came and camped with them, until there were several households of them living there. The boy grew up and learned Arabic from them, and as he grew he became dear to them and they admired him. When he reached manhood they married him to a woman from among them.Then Ismail's mother died. After Ismail had married, Ibrahim came to see about the family he had left behind. He did not find Ismail, so he asked his wife about him.She said, "He has gone out to seek provision for us."Then he asked her about their living and their circumstances, and she said, "We are badly off. We live in hardship and want." So she complained to him.He said, "When your husband comes, give him and tell him to change the threshold of his door."When Ismail came he seemed to sense something and said, "Has anyone come to you?"She said, "Yes, an old man of such and such a description came to us and asked about you, and I told him. He asked me how we were living, and I told him we were in hardship and want."Ismail asked, "Did he leave you any instruction?"She said, "Yes, he told me to greet you with peace, and he says, change the threshold of your door."Ismail said, "That was my father, and he has commanded me to part from you. Go back to your family." So he divorced her and married another woman from among them.Ibrahim stayed away from them as long as Allah willed. Then he came to them again and did not find Ismail, so he went in to his wife and asked about him.She said, "He has gone out to seek provision for us."He asked, "How are you?" and he asked her about their living and their circumstances.She said, "We are well and have plenty," and she praised Allah.He asked, "What is your food?"She said, "Meat."He asked, "And what is your drink?"She said, "Water."He said, "Allah, bless them in meat and water."The Prophet ﷺ said, "They had no grain in those days, and had they had any he would have prayed for blessing in that too." He added, "Meat and water alone will not agree with anyone anywhere but Makkah."Ibrahim said, "When your husband comes, give him
, and tell him to keep firm the threshold of his door."When Ismail came he asked, "Has anyone come to you?"She said, "Yes, a fine-looking old man came to us," and she spoke well of him. "He asked me about you and I told him. He asked how we were living and I told him we were well."Ismail asked, "Did he leave you any instruction?"She said, "Yes, he greets you with peace and tells you to keep firm the threshold of your door."Ismail said, "That was my father, and you are the threshold. He has commanded me to keep you."Then Ibrahim stayed away from them as long as Allah willed, and afterward he came while Ismail was trimming arrows for himself under a large tree near Zamzam. When Ismail saw him he rose to meet him, and they did as a father does with his son and a son with his father.Then Ibrahim said, "Ismail, Allah has commanded me to do something."Ismail said, "Then do what your Lord has commanded you.""Will you help me?" he asked."I will help you," he said.Ibrahim said, "Allah has commanded me to build a House here," and he pointed to a mound raised above the ground around it.At that they raised the foundations of the House. Ismail would bring the stones and Ibrahim would build. When the building rose high, Ismail brought this stone and set it down for him, and he stood on it and built while Ismail handed him the stones, and the two of them were saying, "Our Lord, accept from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing" [Baqarah 2:127]. So they went on building, circling around the House, and saying, "Our Lord, accept from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing."
أول ما اتخذ النساء المنطق من قبل أم إسماعيل اتخذت منطقا لتعفي أثرها على سارة، ثم جاء بها إبراهيم وبابنها إسماعيل وهي ترضعه، حتى وضعهما عند البيت عند دوحة فوق زمزم في أعلى المسجد، وليس بمكة يومئذ أحد، وليس بها ماء فوضعهما هنالك، ووضع عندهما جرابا فيه تمر وسقاء فيه ماء، ثم قفى إبراهيم منطلقا فتبعته أم إسماعيل فقالت: يا إبراهيم أين تذهب وتتركنا بهذا الوادي الذي ليس فيه إنس ولا شيء؟ فقالت له ذلك مرارا، وجعل لا يلتفت إليها، فقالت له: آلله الذي أمرك بهذا؟ قال: نعم. قالت: إذن لا يضيعنا، ثم رجعت. فانطلق إبراهيم حتى إذا كان عند الثنية حيث لا يرونه استقبل بوجهه البيت ثم دعا بهؤلاء الكلمات ورفع يديه فقال: {ربنا إني أسكنت من ذريتي بواد غير ذي زرع} حتى بلغ {يشكرون} [إبراهيم: ٣٧] وجعلت أم إسماعيل ترضع إسماعيل وتشرب من ذلك الماء، حتى إذا نفد ما في السقاء عطشت وعطش ابنها، وجعلت تنظر إليه يتلوى-أو قال: يتلبط- فانطلقت كراهية أن تنظر إليه، فوجدت الصفا أقرب جبل في الأرض يليها، فقامت عليه، ثم استقبلت الوادي تنظر هل ترى أحدا فلم تر أحدا، فهبطت من الصفا، حتى إذا بلغت الوادي رفعت طرف درعها، ثم سعت سعي الإنسان المجهود حتى جاوزت الوادي، ثم أتت المروة فقامت عليها ونظرت هل ترى أحدا، فلم تر أحدا، ففعلت ذلك سبع مرات، قال ابن عباس: قال النبي ﷺ: فلذلك سعي الناس بينهما فلما أشرفت على المروة سمعت صوتا فقالت: صه-تريد نفسها- ثم تسمعت فسمعت أيضا فقالت: قد أسمعت إن كان عندك غواث، فإذا هي بالملك عند موضع زمزم، فبحث بعقبه-أو قال: بجناحه- حتى ظهر الماء، فجعلت تحوضه وتقول بيدها هكذا، وجعلت تغرف من الماء في سقائها وهو يفور بعد ما تغرف. قال ابن عباس: قال النبي ﷺ: رحم الله أم إسماعيل لو تركت زمزم-أو قال: لو لم تغرف من الماء لكانت زمزم عينا معينا قال: فشربت وأرضعت ولدها، فقال لها الملك: لا تخافوا الضيعة، فإن ها هنا بيت الله يبني هذا الغلام وأبوه، وإن الله لا يضيع أهله، وكان البيت مرتفعا من الأرض كالرابية، تأتيه السيول فتأخذ عن يمينه وشماله، فكانت كذلك حتى مرت بهم رفقة من جرهم-أو أهل بيت من جرهم- مقبلين من طريق كداء، فنزلوا في أسفل مكة، فرأوا طائرا عائفا فقالوا: إن هذا الطائر ليدور على ماء لعهدنا بهذا الوادي وما فيه ماء، فأرسلوا جريا-أو جريين- فإذا هم بالماء، فرجعوا فأخبروهم بالماء، فأقبلوا-قال: وأم إسماعيل عند الماء- فقالوا: أتأذنين لنا أن ننزل عندك؟ فقالت: نعم، ولكن لا حق لكم في الماء. قالوا: نعم. قال ابن عباس: قال النبي ﷺ: فألفى ذلك أم إسماعيل وهي تحب الإنس فنزلوا وأرسلوا إلى أهليهم فنزلوا معهم، حتى إذا كان بها أهل أبيات منهم، وشب الغلام وتعلم العربية منهم، وأنفسهم وأعجبهم حين شب، فلما أدرك زوجوه امرأة منهم. وماتت أم إسماعيل، فجاء إبراهيم بعدما تزوج إسماعيل يطالع تركته، فلم يجد إسماعيل فسأل امرأته عنه فقالت: خرج يبتغي لنا، ثم سألها عن عيشهم وهيئتهم فقالت: نحن بشر، نحن في ضيق وشدة، فشكت إليه. قال: فإذا جاء زوجك فاقرئي عليه السلام وقولي له بغير عتبة بابه. فلما جاء إسماعيل كأنه أنس شيئا فقال: هل جاءكم من أحد؟ قالت: نعم جاءنا شيخ كذا وكذا، فسألنا عنك فأخبرته، وسألني كيف عيشنا، فأخبرته أننا في جهد وشدة، قال: فهل أوصاك بشيء؟ قالت: نعم، أمرني أن أقرأ عليك السلام، ويقول: غير عتبة بابك. قال: ذاك أبي، وقد أمرني أن أفارقك، الحقي بأهلك فطلقها وتزوج منهم أخرى، فلبث عنهم إبراهيم ما شاء الله، ثم أتاهم بعد فلم يجده، فدخل على امرأته فسألها عنه فقالت: خرج يبتغي لنا. قال: كيف أنتم؟ وسألها عن عيشهم وهيئتهم فقالت: نحن بخير وسعة، وأثنت على الله. فقال: ما طعامكم؟ قالت: اللحم. قال: فما شرابكم؟ قالت: الماء. قال: اللهم بارك لهم في اللحم والماء قال النبي ﷺ: ولم يكن لهم يومئذ حب ولو كان لهم دعا لهم فيه قال: فهما لا يخلو عليهما أحد بغير مكة إلا لم يوافقاه. قال: فإذا جاء زوجك فاقرئي عليه السلام، ومريه يثبت عتبة بابه، فلما جاء إسماعيل قال: هل أتاكم من أحد؟ قالت: نعم، أتانا شيخ حسن الهيئة، وأثنت عليه فسألني عنك فأخبرته، فسألني كيف عيشنا؟ فأخبرته أننا بخير، قال: فأوصاك بشيء؟ قالت: نعم، هو يقرأ عليك السلام، ويأمرك أن تثبت عتبة بابك. قال: ذلك أبي وأنت العتبة، أمرني أن أمسكك. ثم لبث عنهم ما شاء الله، ثم جاء بعد ذلك وإسماعيل يبري نبلا له تحت دوحة قريبا من زمزم، فلما رآه قام إليه، فصنعا كما يصنع الوالد بالولد والولد بالوالد ثم قال: يا إسماعيل إن الله أمرني بأمر. قال: فاصنع ما أمرك ربك. قال: وتعينني؟ قال: وأعينك. قال: فإن الله أمرني أن أبني ها هنا بيتا-وأشار إلى أكمة مرتفعة على ما حولها- قال: فعند ذلك رفعا القواعد من البيت، فجعل إسماعيل يأتي بالحجارة، وإبراهيم يبني، حتى إذا ارتفع البناء جاء بهذا الحجر فوضعه له، فقام عليه وهو يبني، وإسماعيل يناوله الحجارة، وهما يقولان: {ربنا تقبل منا إنك أنت السميع العليم} [البقرة: ١٢٧] قال: فجعلا يبنيان حتى يدورا حول البيت وهما يقولان: {ربنا تقبل منا إنك أنت السميع العليم}
Bukhari narrated it in the chapters on the prophets (3364) from Abdullah bin Muhammad, who said, Abdul-Razzaq narrated to us, who said, Mamar informed us, from Ayub Sakhtiyani and Kathir bin Kathir bin Muttalib bin Abu Wada, one of them adding to what the other said, from Saeed bin Jubayr, who said, Ibn Abbas mentioned it.
