When what happened between Ibrahim and his household happened, he set out with Ismail and Ismail's mother, and with them was an old waterskin containing water. Ismail's mother would drink from the waterskin and her milk would flow abundantly for her infant. So he came to Makkah and set her down beneath a great shady tree, and then Ibrahim turned back toward his household. Ismail's mother followed after him, and when they reached Kadaa she called out to him from behind,"Ibrahim, to whom are you leaving us?"He said, "To Allah."She said, "Then I am content with Allah."So she went back and began drinking from the waterskin, and her milk flowed abundantly for her infant, until the water ran out. Then she said, "If only I went and looked around, perhaps I might sense someone." So she went and climbed Safa and looked and looked to see whether she could sense anyone, but she sensed no one. When she reached the valley floor she ran, in the way a woman runs, and she did this for several rounds. Then she said, "If only I went and looked to see what has become of him," meaning the child. So she went and looked, and there he was in his condition, as though he were on the verge of death. She could not bear it, so she said, "If only I went and looked, perhaps I might sense someone." So she went and climbed Safa and looked and looked, but she sensed no one, until she had completed seven rounds.Then she said, "If only I went and looked to see what has become of him." And suddenly she heard a voice, so she said, "Bring help, if you have any good with you." And there was Jibreel. He did thus with his heel, pressing his heel into the ground, and the water gushed forth. Ismail's mother was astonished, and she began to dig it out.Abu Qasim ﷺ said, "Had she left it alone, the water would have remained flowing on the surface."So she began to drink from the water, and her milk flowed abundantly for her infant.Then some people of Jurhum passed through the valley floor, and they saw birds. It seems they found this strange, and they said, "Birds are never found except over water." So they sent their scout, and he looked, and there was the water. He came back to them and told them, and they went to her and said, "Ismail's mother, will you permit us to be with you," or "to settle with you?" And it came to be that Ismail married a woman among them.Then the thought came to Ibrahim, and he said to his household, "I am going to look in on the ones I left behind." He came and gave his greetings and said, "Where is Ismail?"His wife said, "He has gone out hunting."Ibrahim said, "Tell him when he comes to change the threshold of his door."When Ismail came, she told him. He said, "That was he. Go back to your family."Then the thought came to Ibrahim again, and he said to his household, "I am going to look in on the ones I left behind." He came and said, "Where is Ismail?"His wife said, "He has gone out hunting." Then she said, "Will you not come down and eat and drink?"He said, "And what is your food and what is your drink?"She said, "Our food is meat and our drink is water."He said, "Allah, bless them in their food and their drink."Abu Qasim ﷺ said, "A blessing through the supplication of Ibrahim."Then the thought came to Ibrahim again, and he said to his household, "I am going to look in on the ones I left behind." He came and found Ismail behind Zamzam mending some arrows of his, and he said, "Ismail, your Lord has commanded me to build a house for Him."Ismail said, "Then obey your Lord."He said, "He has commanded that you help me with it."Ismail said, "Then I will do so," or something to that effect.So the two of them rose, and Ibrahim began to build while Ismail handed him the stones, and both of them were saying, "Our Lord, accept this from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing" [Baqarah 2:127]. This went on until the building rose high and the old man grew too weak to carry the stones, so he stood upon the stone of the Station, and Ismail kept handing him the stones, and both of them were saying, "Our Lord, accept this from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing" [Baqarah 2:127].
لما كان بين إبراهيم وبين أهله ما كان خرج بإسماعيل وأم إسماعيل، ومعهم شنة فيها ماء، فجعلت أم إسماعيل تشرب من الشنة فيدر لبنها على صبيها حتى قدم مكة فوضعها تحت دوحة، ثم رجع إبراهيم إلى أهله، فاتبعته أم إسماعيل حتى لما بلغوا كداء ناداته من ورائه: يا إبراهيم إلى من تتركنا؟ قال: إلى الله. قالت: رضيت بالله، قال: فرجعت فجعلت تشرب من الشنة ويدر لبنها على صبيها حتى لما فني الماء قالت: لو ذهبت فنظرت لعلي أحس أحدا. قال: فذهبت فصعدت الصفا فنظرت ونظرت هل تحس أحدا؟ فلم تحس أحدا، فلما بلغت الوادي سعت وأنت المرأة، ففعلت ذلك أشواطا، ثم قالت: لو ذهبت فنظرت ما فعل-تعني الصبي- فذهبت فنظرت فإذا هو على حاله كأنه ينشق للموت، فلم تقرأ نفسها فقالت: لو ذهبت فنظرت لعلي أحس أحدا، فذهبت فصعدت الصفا فنظرت ونظرت فلم تحس أحدا، حتى أتمت سبعا ثم قالت: لو ذهبت فنظرت ما فعل فإذا هي بصوت فقالت: أغث إن كان عندك خير، فإذا جبريل قال: فقال بعقبه هكذا، وغمز عقبه على الأرض قال: فانبثق الماء، فدهشت أم إسماعيل فجعلت تحفر. قال: فقال أبو القاسم ﷺ: لو تركته كان الماء ظاهرا قال: فجعلت تشرب من الماء ويدر لبنها على صبيها. قال: فمر ناس من جرهم ببطن الوادي فإذا هم بطير، كأنهم أنكروا ذلك وقالوا: ما يكون الطير إلا على ماء، فبعثوا رسولهم فنظر، فإذا هم بالماء، فأتاهم فأخبرهم، فأتوا إليها فقالوا: يا أم إسماعيل أتأذنين لنا أن نكون معك-أو نسكن معك؟- فبلغ إنها نكح فيهم امرأة. قال: ثم إنه بدا لإبراهيم فقال لأهله: إني مطلع تركتي. قال: فجاء فسلم فقال: أين إسماعيل؟ فقالت امرأته: ذهب يصيد. قال: قولي له إذا جاء غير عتبة بابك، فلما جاء أخبرته. قال: أنت ذلك، فاذهبي إلى أهلك قال: ثم إنه بدا لإبراهيم فقال لأهله: إني مطلع تركتي قال: فجاء فقال: أين إسماعيل؟ فقالت امرأته: ذهب يصيد فقالت: ألا تنزل فتطعم وتشرب؟ فقال: وما طعامكم وما شرابكم؟ قالت: طعامنا اللحم وشرابنا الماء. قال: اللهم بارك لهم في طعامهم وشرابهم قال: فقال أبو القاسم ﷺ: بركة بدعوة إبراهيم قال: ثم إنه بدا لإبراهيم فقال لأهله: إني مطلع تركتي، فجاء فوافق إسماعيل من وراء زمزم يصلح نبلا له فقال: يا إسماعيل إن ربك أمرني أن أبني له بيتا قال: أطع ربك قال: إنه قد أمرني أن تعينني عليه قال: إذن أفعل أو كما قال قال: فقاما فجعل إبراهيم يبني وإسماعيل يناوله الحجارة ويقولان: {ربنا تقبل منا إنك أنت السميع العليم} قال: حتى ارتفع البناء وضعف الشيخ عن نقل الحجارة، فقام على حجر المقام فجعل يناوله الحجارة ويقولان: {ربنا تقبل منا إنك أنت السميع العليم}
Bukhari narrated it in the Hadiths of the Prophets (3365) from Abdullah bin Muhammad, who said, we were told by Abu Amir Abdul-Malik bin Amr, who said, we were told by Ibrahim bin Nafi, from Kathir bin Kathir, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, and he mentioned it.Part of this hadith is explicitly attributed to the Prophet, while part of it is attributed only to Ibn Abbas himself. Ibn Abbas had no prior knowledge of this ancient history, so perhaps he took it from the Prophet ﷺ as well, even though he did not attribute it to him explicitly. However, Hafiz bin Kathir said in Bidayah wa Nihayah (1/361), "This hadith is from the words of Ibn Abbas, interspersed with parts attributed to the Prophet, and some of it is unusual, as though Ibn Abbas received it from the Israelite traditions."I say, this is strange coming from Ibn Kathir. How can this be from the Israelite traditions, when they do not even acknowledge the existence of Makkah, nor the migration of Hajar and her son to it? Rather, they say that Ibrahim expelled Hajar and her son, so the mother and her son wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba in southern Palestine, and from that time Ismail lived in the wilderness of Paran in southern Palestine, on the borders of the Sinai Peninsula, as stated in the Book of Genesis, chapter twenty-one. This is what they say.Perhaps Imam Bukhari mentioned this hadith as a continuation of the first hadith in the chapter, narrated from Ibn Abbas from the Prophet ﷺ, "May Allah have mercy on the mother of Ismail. Had she not been hasty, Zamzam would have been a flowing spring." All of it carries the status of being attributed to the Prophet.
