When I arrived in Najran, the people there asked me, "You recite, 'Sister of Harun,' yet Musa came before Isa by such and such a length of time."When I returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I asked him about this, and he replied, "They used to name their children after their prophets and the righteous people who came before them."
لما قدمت نجران سألوني فقالوا: إنكم تقرؤون: يا أخت هارون، وموسى قبل عيسى لكذا وكذا، فلما قدمت على رسول الله ﷺ سألته عن ذلك، فقال: إنهم كانوا يسمون بأنبيائهم والصالحين قبلهم.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Manners (2135) through several routes from Ibn Idris, from his father, from Simak bin Harb, from Alqama bin Waail, from Mughira bin Shuba, who said, and then mentioned it.As for his statement that they used to name themselves after their prophets, this means they traced their lineage back to their prophets, even though those prophets had lived centuries before them. Harun here refers to the Harun of Musa, but Maryam was not the sister of Harun and Musa. Rather, she was given their names because she belonged to their tribe.As for what was narrated from Saad bin Junada Awfi, attributed to the Prophet, that he said, "Allah has married me in Paradise to Maryam daughter of Imran, the wife of Pharaoh, and the sister of Musa," and likewise what was narrated from Abu Umama, Ibn Abbas, and others, all of it is daif.Hafiz bin Kathir mentioned it in Bidayah wa Nihayah (2/432-433) and said, "All these hadiths have something questionable in their chains of transmission."
