I said to Ibn Abbas, "Nawf al-Bikali claims that the Musa who was the companion of Khidr was not the Musa of the Children of Israil, but another Musa."Ibn Abbas replied, "The enemy of Allah has lied. Ubayy bin Kaab told us, from the Prophet ﷺ, that Musa once stood to address the Children of Israil and was asked, 'Who is the most knowledgeable of people?' He answered, 'I am.' So Allah reproached him, because he had not referred the knowledge back to Him. Allah said to him, 'Not so. I have a servant at the junction of the two seas who is more knowledgeable than you.'Musa said, 'My Lord, how can I reach him?'" And sometimes Sufyan would say, "'My Lord, how do I find my way to him?'"Allah said, "Take a fish and put it in a basket. Wherever you lose the fish, he will be there." And sometimes Sufyan said, "he will be right there."So Musa took a fish and put it in a basket, then he and his servant Yusha bin Nun set out. When they reached the rock they laid down their heads, and Musa slept. The fish stirred, slipped out, and fell into the sea, and it took its way through the sea like a tunnel. Allah held back the flow of the water from the fish so that it formed something like an archway. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Like this, like an archway."They travelled on the rest of that night and through the day, and when the next morning came Musa said to his servant, "Bring us our meal. We have suffered fatigue on this journey of ours." Yet Musa felt no fatigue until he had passed the place Allah had commanded him to reach. His servant said to him, "Do you recall when we took shelter at the rock? I forgot the fish, and only Satan made me forget to mention it, and it took its way through the sea in a wondrous manner." For the fish it was a tunnel, and for the two of them a wonder.Musa said to him, "That is exactly what we were seeking." So they retraced their steps, following their tracks back until they came to the rock, and there was a man wrapped in a garment.Musa greeted him with peace, and the man returned the greeting and said, "How does peace come to be in your land?"Musa said, "I am Musa."The man asked, "The Musa of the Children of Israil?"Musa said, "Yes. I have come to you so that you may teach me some of the right guidance you have been taught."Khidr said, "Musa, I have knowledge from the knowledge of Allah which Allah taught me and which you do not know, and you have knowledge from the knowledge of Allah which Allah taught you and which I do not know."Musa asked, "May I follow you?"Khidr replied as Allah relates, "Indeed, you will not be able to have patience with me. And how can you have patience over what you do not comprehend in knowledge?" up to His words, "a grave thing" [Kahf 18:68–71].So they set off walking along the shore of the sea, and a ship passed by them. They spoke to the crew, asking to be carried, and the crew recognized Khidr and carried them without a fare. When the two of them were aboard the ship, a sparrow came and settled on the edge of the vessel, then dipped its beak into the sea once or twice.Khidr said to him, "Musa, my knowledge and your knowledge diminish nothing of the knowledge of Allah except as much as this sparrow has taken from the sea with its beak."Then Khidr took an axe and pulled out a plank. Musa was startled to find that he had torn out a plank with the adze, and he said to him, "What have you done? These are people who carried us without a fare, and you have deliberately damaged their ship to drown those aboard it. You have done a grave thing.""He said, 'Did I not tell you that you would not be able to have patience with me?'" [Kahf 18:72] "He said, 'Do not hold me accountable for what I forgot, and do not press me with hardship in my affair.'" [Kahf 18:73] So Musa's first objection was out of forgetfulness. When they left the sea they passed a boy playing with other children. Khidr took hold of his head and pulled it off with his hand, like this. Sufyan gestured with his fingertips as though plucking something."Musa said to him, 'Have you killed a pure soul who had killed no one? You have certainly done a horrible thing.'" [Kahf 18:74] "He said, 'Did I not tell you that you would not be able to have patience with me?'" [Kahf 18:75] "He said, 'If I ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion. You have received from me an excuse.'" [Kahf 18:76] "So they set out, until when they came to the people of a town they asked its people for food, but they refused to offer them hospitality. There they found a wall about to collapse" [Kahf 18:77], leaning over. Khidr gestured with his hand like this. Sufyan gestured as though smoothing something upward, and I only once heard Sufyan mention the word "leaning."Musa said, "These are people we came to who would not feed us or host us, and you went and repaired their wall. Had you wished, you could have taken a wage for it.' He said, 'This is the parting between me and you. I will inform you of the interpretation of that over which you could not have patience." [Kahf 18:78]The Prophet ﷺ said, "We would have wished that Musa had been patient, so that Allah might have related more of their story to us."Sufyan reported the Prophet's words as, "May Allah have mercy on Musa. Had he been patient, more of their affair would have been related to us."Ibn Abbas recited, "before them was a king who seized every sound ship by force" [Kahf 18:79], and, "as for the boy, he was a disbeliever and his parents were believers" [Kahf 18:80].Then Sufyan said to me, "I heard it from him twice and memorized it from him."Sufyan was asked, "Did you memorize it before hearing it from Amr, or did you memorize it from someone else?"He said, "From whom would I have memorized it? Has anyone other than me narrated it from Amr? I heard it from him twice, or three times, and memorized it from him."
Bukhari narrated it in the Hadiths of the Prophets (3401), and Muslim in the Book of Virtues (2380:170), both through routes from Sufyan, who said, Amr bin Dinar told us, he said, Saeed bin Jubayr informed me, he said, I said to Ibn Abbas, and he mentioned it.
