The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Were it not for the Children of Israil, food would never spoil and meat would never go rancid. And were it not for Hawwa, no female would ever betray her husband through the ages."
عن رسول الله ﷺ قال: ولولا بنو إسرائيل لم يخبث الطعام، ولم يخنز اللحم. ولولا حواء لم تخن أنثى زوجها الدهر.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of the Prophets (3330), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Suckling (1470-65), both from Muamar bin Rashid, from Hammam bin Munabbih, from Abu Hurairah, as mentioned. The wording given here is Muslim's.Ibn Hajar said in Fath al-Bari (6/376), "Its meaning is that had Banu Israil not made a practice of storing meat until it went rotten, meat would not have been stored and would not go rotten." He also said, "The saying, 'and had it not been for Eve, no woman would ever have betrayed her husband,' means that Eve accepted what Iblis made appealing to her, until she made it appealing to Adam. Since she was the mother of Adam's daughters, they resembled her through birth and inherited traits, so hardly any woman is free from betraying her husband, whether in deed or in word. What is meant by betrayal here is not the commission of shameful acts, far be it and by no means."
