While Abdullah bin Umar was sitting with him as he was opening a small door of his, they suddenly came upon a snake from among the household snakes. They wanted to kill it, but Abu Lubabah said, "He forbade killing them," meaning the household snakes, "and he ordered the killing of the short-tailed snake and the snake with two stripes." It is said that these two are the ones that snatch away eyesight and cause women to miscarry.
فبينما عبد الله بن عمر جالسا معه يفتح خوخة له، إذا هم بحية من عوامر البيوت فأرادوا قتلها فقال أبو لبابة: إنه قد نهى عنهن يريد عوامر البيوت، وأمر بقتل الأبتر وذي الطفيتين وقيل: هما اللذان يلتمعان البصر، ويطرحان أولاد النساء.
Bukhari narrated it, in an abridged form, in "The Beginning of Creation" (3312, 3313), and Muslim in "Greetings" (2233:135) - and the wording here is his. Both of them transmitted it through routes from Nafi, from Abu Lubaba, who related it as mentioned.In another wording from Nafi, also found in Muslim, Abu Lubaba spoke to Ibn Umar asking him to open a door in his house so that he could get closer to the masjid through it. The servants then found the skin of a house snake, so Abdullah said, "Search for it and kill it." Abu Lubaba said, "Do not kill it, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade killing the house snakes found inside homes."In another wording of theirs, also from Nafi, Ibn Umar used to kill every snake, until Abu Lubaba bin Abdul-Mundhir, the Badri, told us that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade killing the house snakes, so he stopped.Both of them also narrated it through Zuhri, from Salim, from Ibn Umar, with similar wording. Bukhari recorded it in "The Beginning of Creation" (3297, 3298) and Muslim in "Greetings" (2233:130), both through the narration of Mamar, from Zuhri, from Salim, from Ibn Umar, that he heard the Prophet delivering a sermon on the pulpit, saying, "Kill snakes, and kill the one with two stripes and the short-tailed one, for they blind the eyesight and cause miscarriage."Abdullah said, "While I was chasing a snake to kill it, Abu Lubaba called out to me, 'Do not kill it.' I said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has commanded that snakes be killed.' He said, 'He later forbade killing those that dwell in houses, the ones called awamir.'" This is the wording of Bukhari.Bukhari said following this, "Abdul-Razzaq said, from Mamar, 'Abu Lubaba or Zayd bin Khattab saw me,' and Yunus, Ibn Uyayna, Ishaq Kalbi, and Zubaydi followed him in this wording. Salih, Ibn Abu Hafsa, and Ibn Mujammi said, from Zuhri, from Salim, from Ibn Umar, 'Abu Lubaba and Zayd bin Khattab saw me.'"
