The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not recite to the jinn, nor did he ever see them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out with a group of his companions heading for the market of Ukaz. Now a barrier had been placed between the devils and the news of heaven, and shooting stars were sent against them. So the devils returned to their people, who asked them, "What is wrong with you?"They said, "A barrier has been placed between us and the news of heaven, and shooting stars have been sent against us."Their people said, "This can only be because of something that has happened. Spread out across the east and the west of the earth and find out what it is that has come between us and the news of heaven."So they set out, scouring the east and the west of the earth. The band of them who had taken the direction of Tihamah passed by the Prophet ﷺ, who was at Nakhl on his way to the market of Ukaz, and he was leading his companions in the Fajr prayer. When they heard the Quran they listened closely to it and said, "This is what has come between us and the news of heaven." They returned to their people and said, "Our people, we have heard a wondrous recitation that guides to what is right, so we have believed in it, and we will never associate anyone with our Lord."Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed to His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, "Say, it has been revealed to me that a band of the jinn listened, and they said, we have heard a wondrous recitation" [Jinn 72:1], and the rest of the hadith.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Adhan (773) from Musaddad, and in the Book of Tafsir (4921) from Musa bin Ismail, and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Prayer (449-149) from Shayban bin Farroukh. All of them narrated it through Abu Awana, from Abu Bishr Jafar bin Abu Wahshiya, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, who related it. The wording given is Muslim's.As for Bukhari, he did not mention the first part of Ibn Abbas's statement, namely his saying, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not recite to the jinn, nor did he see them," even though Abu Nuaym, in his Mustakhraj, narrated it from Tabarani, from Muaz bin Muthanna, from Musaddad, Bukhari's own teacher, and included in it Ibn Abbas's statement just as Muslim narrated it from Shayban bin Farroukh, from Abu Awana. Imam Ahmad likewise narrated it (2271) from Affan, from Abu Awana. So did Bukhari omit it deliberately, because it contradicts the hadith of Ibn Masud, which affirms that the Prophet ﷺ did recite to the jinn and which takes precedence over Ibn Abbas's denial, or did Musaddad's narration simply reach him in this form? The former explanation is more likely.Bayhaqi, as found in Dalail Nubuwwah, interpreted Ibn Abbas's hadith as referring to the first occasion on which the jinn heard the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ recitation and became aware of his situation, at which time he had not yet recited to them or seen them. Later, a summoner from among the jinn came to him, so he went with him, recited the Quran to them, and called them to Allah , as related in Ibn Masud's narration.Ibn Kathir mentioned this in his tafsir of Surah Ahqaf (7/274), and in this way both reports are shown to be sound. "Nakhlah" is a place between Makkah and Taif, also sometimes called Batn Nakhlah.Ahmad (1/427), Tirmidhi (3324), and Nasai in his Sunan al-Kubra (11562) all narrated it through various routes from Israil bin Yunus bin Abu Ishaq, who said, Abu Ishaq narrated to us, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, who said, "The jinn used to ascend to the sky to listen to the revelation. When they heard a word, they would add nine words of their own to it. The word they had actually heard would be true, while what they added would be false. But when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sent, they were barred from their seats. They mentioned this to Iblis, for stars had not been hurled down before that time. Iblis said to them, 'This can only be because of some matter that has occurred on earth.' So he sent out his soldiers, and they found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ standing in prayer between two mountains, I think he said, in Makkah. They came to him and told him, and he said, 'This is the matter that has occurred on earth.'"This is the wording of Tirmidhi, who added afterward, "This is a hasan sahih hadith."It can be learned from this hadith that Iblis sent his soldiers to investigate the cause, and they listened to the Quran, believed, and returned to their people as warners.
