I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Whoever wrongfully takes a hand-span of land will have it placed around his neck on the Day of Resurrection from seven earths deep."
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: من أخذ شبرا من الأرض ظلما فإنه يطوقه يوم القيامة إلى سبع أرضين.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of the Beginning of Creation (3198), and Muslim in the Book of Sharecropping (1611:139), both through the route of Hisham bin Urwa, from Urwa bin Zubayr, from Saeed bin Zayd, who said, then he mentioned it. The wording is Bukhari's, and Muslim related it similarly, mentioning the story that Arwa bint Uways claimed against Saeed bin Zayd that he had taken part of her land, so she brought her dispute against him to Marwan bin Hakam. Saeed said, "Would I take anything from her land after what I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" Marwan asked, "What did you hear from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever unjustly takes a hand span of land will have it wrapped around his neck through seven earths.'" Marwan said to him, "I will not ask you for proof after this." Saeed then said, "O Allah, if she is lying, blind her eyes and kill her on her own land." He said, she did not die until she lost her sight, then while she was walking on her land, she fell into a pit and died.In another wording, "I saw her blind, groping along the walls, saying, 'The prayer of Saeed bin Zayd has struck me.' Then, while she was walking in the house, she passed by a well in the house and fell into it, and it became her grave."
