A group of Jews came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Death be upon you." I understood what they said and replied, "Upon you be death and curse."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Easy, Ayesha. Allah loves gentleness in all matters."I said, "Messenger of Allah, did you not hear what they said?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "I already said, 'And upon you.'"
دخل رهط من اليهود على رسول الله ﷺ فقالوا: السام عليك ففهمتها فقلت: عليكم السام واللعنة فقال رسول الله ﷺ: مهلا يا عائشة فإن الله يحب الرفق في الأمر كله فقلت: يا رسول الله أو لم تسمع ما قالوا؟ قال رسول الله ﷺ: فقد قلت: وعليكم.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Seeking Permission (6256), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Greetings (2165), both through routes from Zuhri, from Urwa, from Ayesha, as I mentioned it. In one version reported by Bukhari (6030), "Did you not hear what I said? I returned it upon them, and it is answered against them concerning me, but it is not answered against me concerning them." And in Muslim's version, she said, "Rather, upon you be death and disgrace." His saying, "death and disgrace," as-sam means death, and adh-dham is disgrace.
