He had witnessed Badr with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abu Ubayda bin al-Jarrah to Bahrain to bring back its tribute. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had himself made the peace agreement with the people of Bahrain and appointed Ala bin Hadrami over them.Abu Ubayda arrived with wealth from Bahrain, and when the Ansar heard of his arrival, they came to perform the dawn prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. After the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished the prayer and turned to leave, they presented themselves before him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled when he saw them and said, "I suppose you have heard that Abu Ubayda has arrived with something from Bahrain."They replied, "Indeed, Messenger of Allah."He said, "Then be glad and hope for what will please you. By Allah, it is not poverty that I fear for you. Rather, I fear that worldly riches will be spread out before you as they were spread out before those who came before you, and that you will compete for them as they competed for them, and that they will destroy you as they destroyed those before you."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Jizya (3158), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Zuhd (2961: 6), both of them through Zuhri, who said, Urwa bin Zubayr told me, that Miswar bin Makhrama informed him, on the authority of Amr bin Awf, who said, then he mentioned it.
