I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Whoever is killed defending his property is a martyr, whoever is killed defending his religion is a martyr, whoever is killed defending his life is a martyr, and whoever is killed defending his family is a martyr."
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: من قتل دون ماله فهو شهيد، ومن قتل دون دينه فهو شهيد، ومن قتل دون دمه فهو شهيد، ومن قتل دون أهله فهو شهيد.
Tirmidhi (1421) narrated it, and the wording here is his, as did Abu Dawud (4772), Nasai (4094, 4095), and Ahmad (1652), through various routes from Ibrahim bin Saad bin Ibrahim bin Abdul-Rahman, from his father, from Abu Ubayda bin Muhammad bin Ammar bin Yasir, from Talha bin Abdullah bin Awf, from Saeed bin Zayd, who related it. Tirmidhi said, this is a hasan sahih hadith. I say, it is as he said, and Abu Ubayda bin Muhammad bin Yasir was deemed reliable by Ibn Main and by Abdullah bin Ahmad bin Hanbal.Bukhari narrated it in his Sahih (2452) through the route of Shuayb, from Zuhri, who said, Talha bin Abdullah told me that Abdul-Rahman bin Amr bin Sahl informed him that Saeed bin Zayd said, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Whoever wrongfully takes anything from the land will be made to carry its weight from seven earths." This is how Shuayb narrated it from Zuhri.Ibn Uyayna narrated it as found in Nasai (4090), Ibn Majah (2580), and Ahmad (1628), and Muhammad bin Ishaq narrated it as found in Nasai (4091), both of them from Zuhri, from Talha bin Abdullah bin Awf, from Saeed bin Zayd, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever is killed defending his property is a martyr, and whoever wrongfully takes a hand-span of land will be made to carry its weight from seven earths." So Ibn Uyayna and Ibn Ishaq did not mention the intermediary between Talha bin Abdullah and Saeed bin Zayd.Humaydi (83) said, it was said to Sufyan, "Maamar inserts a man between Talha and Saeed." Sufyan, that is, Ibn Uyayna, replied, "I never heard Zuhri insert anyone between them." It may be said that Talha bin Abdullah bin Awf first heard it through an intermediary, and later it became possible for him to hear it directly without an intermediary. Both chains of transmission are sahih.
