We asked Abdullah bin Masud about this verse, "Do not think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, being provided for" [Aal Imran 3:169].He said, "We have indeed asked about that, and he said, 'Their souls are inside green birds that have lanterns suspended from the Throne. They roam freely in Paradise wherever they wish, then return to those lanterns. Their Lord looked upon them and asked, "Do you desire anything?"They replied, "What could we desire when we roam freely in Paradise wherever we wish?"He did this with them three times. When they saw that they would not be left alone without being questioned, they said, "Lord, we wish that You return our souls to our bodies so that we may be killed in Your cause once again."When He saw that they had no need, they were left alone.'"
سألنا عبد الله بن مسعود عن هذه الآية: {ولا تحسبن الذين قتلوا في سبيل الله أمواتا بل أحياء عند ربهم يرزقون} قال: أما إنا قد سألنا عن ذلك فقال: أرواحهم في جوف طير خضر لها قناديل معلقة بالعرش تسرح من الجنة حيث شاءت، ثم تأوي إلى تلك القناديل فاطلع إليهم ربهم اطلاعة فقال: هل تشتهون شيئا؟ قالوا: أي شيء نشتهي ونحن نسرح من الجنة حيث شئنا ففعل ذلك بهم ثلاث مرات، فلما رأوا أنهم لن يتركوا من أن يسألوا. قالوا: يا رب نريد أن ترد أرواحنا في أجسادنا حتى نقتل في سبيلك مرة أخرى فلما رأى أن ليس لهم حاجة تركوا.
