I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, "By the One in whose hand my soul rests, were it not that some men among the believers cannot bear to stay behind when I march out, and I cannot find mounts to carry them, I would never have stayed behind from any expedition setting out to fight in the path of Allah. By the One in whose hand my soul rests, I would love to be killed in the path of Allah, then brought back to life, then killed, then brought back to life, then killed, then brought back to life, then killed."
Bukhari related it in the Book of Jihad and Expeditions (2797) via Zuhri, from Saeed bin Musayab, from Abu Hurairah, who narrated it. Muslim also related it in the Book of Leadership (1876) through other routes from Abu Hurairah.
