The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out a reconnaissance party of ten men and placed Asim bin Thabit al-Ansari, the grandfather of Asim bin Umar bin Khattab, in command. They set out, and when they reached al-Hadah, a place between Usfan and Mecca, they were reported to a clan of Huzayl called Banu Lihyan, who mobilized about two hundred men, all archers, in pursuit. The pursuers tracked them by following their trail until they came upon the date stones the party had eaten from provisions they had brought from Medina. They said, "These are dates of Yathrib," and continued tracking them. When Asim and his companions saw them, they took refuge on a high mound, and the enemy surrounded them. The pursuers called out, "Come down and surrender to us. You have our pledge and covenant that we will not kill any of you."Asim bin Thabit, the leader of the party, said, "As for me, by Allah, I will not come down today under the protection of a disbeliever. Allah, inform Your Prophet about us."They shot arrows at them and killed Asim along with seven others. Then three men came down to them on the strength of the pledge and covenant. Among them were Khubayb al-Ansari, Ibn Dathinah, and another man. Once the pursuers had them in their power, they loosened the strings of their bows and tied them up.The third man said, "This is the first act of treachery. By Allah, I will not go with you. I have an example in these," meaning the slain. They dragged him and tried to force him to go with them, but he refused, so they killed him. They took Khubayb and Ibn Dathinah and sold them in Mecca after the Battle of Badr. The sons of Harith bin Amir bin Nawfal bin Abd Manaf bought Khubayb, since it was Khubayb who had killed Harith bin Amir on the day of Badr. Khubayb remained their captive.Ubaydullah bin Iyad informed me that the daughter of Harith told him, "When they had gathered to kill him, he asked to borrow a razor from me to shave his pubic hair, and I lent it to him. He took a son of mine while I was unaware, when the boy came to him." She said, "I found him with the boy seated on his thigh and the razor in his hand. I was so startled that Khubayb noticed it on my face. He said, 'Do you fear that I will kill him? I would never do such a thing.'" She said, "By Allah, I never saw a captive better than Khubayb. By Allah, I once saw him eating from a cluster of grapes in his hand while he was bound in iron, and there were no fruits in Mecca at the time." She used to say, "It was a provision from Allah that Allah provided for Khubayb."When they took him out of the sacred precinct to kill him in the lawful area, Khubayb said to them, "Let me pray two cycles of prayer." They let him, and he prayed two cycles. Then he said, "Were it not that you might think I am afraid, I would have prolonged it. Allah, count them in number."I do not care, when I am killed as a Muslim, on which side my fall to death may be for Allah's sake. That is for the sake of Allah, and if He wills, He will bless the limbs of a body torn to pieces. Then Ibn Harith killed him. It was Khubayb who established the practice of two cycles of prayer for every Muslim killed in captivity.Allah answered the prayer of Asim bin Thabit on the day he was struck down. The Prophet ﷺ informed his companions of their news and what had befallen them. Some of the disbelievers of Quraysh sent men to Asim when they were told he had been killed, to bring back something of him by which he could be recognized, for he had killed one of their notables at Badr. But Allah sent over Asim something like a cloud of hornets that protected him from their messenger, and they were unable to cut away any part of his flesh.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Jihad and Military Expeditions (3045), from Abu Yaman, who said, Shuayb informed us, from Zuhri, who said, Amr bin Abu Sufyan bin Usayd bin Jariya Thaqafi, who was an ally of Banu Zahra and one of the companions of Abu Hurairah, informed me that Abu Hurairah said, and then he mentioned it.
