I set out from Madinah heading toward al-Ghabah. When I reached the mountain pass of al-Ghabah, a servant of Abdul-Rahman bin Awf met me.I said, "What's the matter with you?"He said, "The milk-camels of the Prophet ﷺ have been seized."I asked, "Who took them?"He replied, "Ghatafan and Fazarah."So I shouted three times, loud enough to be heard between the two lava fields of Madinah, "A raid in the morning! A raid in the morning!"Then I rushed off until I caught up with them after they had taken the camels. I began shooting arrows at them, saying, "I am the son of al-Akwa, and today is the day the lowly are destroyed!"I rescued the camels from them before they could even drink, and I came back driving them along. The Prophet ﷺ met me, and I said, "Messenger of Allah, the people are thirsty, and I rushed them away before they could drink. Send a force after them."He said, "Son of al-Akwa, you have prevailed, so be gentle. The people are now being received as guests among their own people."
Bukhari narrated it in jihad and expeditions (3041), and Muslim narrated it in jihad and expeditions (1806:131), both of them through routes from Yazid bin Abu Ubayd, who said, "I heard Salama bin Akwa say," and then he mentioned it.His saying, "fa-asjih" means, be good and be gentle.
