I heard Kaab bin Malik recount the time he stayed behind from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never intended a military expedition without disguising it by hinting at another destination.
سمعت كعب بن مالك حين تخلف عن رسول الله ﷺ، ولم يكن رسول الله ﷺ يريد غزوة إلا ورى بغيرها.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Jihad and Expeditions (2947), and Muslim in the Book of Repentance (2769:54), both from the hadith of Ibn Shihab Zuhri, who said, Abdul-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Kaab bin Malik told me, that Abdullah bin Kaab mentioned it. The wording given here is Bukhari's.
