The Prophet ﷺ sent Khalid bin Walid to the tribe of Banu Jadhimah, and he called them to Islam. They did not know how to say, "We have accepted Islam," so they began saying, "Sabana, sabana" (meaning "we have changed our religion"). Khalid then began killing some of them and capturing others, and he handed over a captive to each one of us.When a certain day came, Khalid ordered each of us to kill his captive. I said, "By Allah, I will not kill my captive, nor will any of my companions kill his captive."We went to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned what had happened. The Prophet ﷺ raised his hands and said, "O Allah, I disassociate myself before You from what Khalid has done," repeating it twice.
بعث النبي ﷺ خالد بن الوليد إلى بني جذيمة فدعاهم إلى الإسلام فلم يحسنوا أن يقولوا: أسلمنا، فجعلوا يقولون: صبأنا صبأنا، فجعل خالد يقتل منهم ويأسر، ودفع إلى كل رجل منا أسيره حتى إذا كان يوم، أمر خالد أن يقتل كل رجل منا أسيره، فقلت: والله لا أقتل أسيري، ولا يقتل رجل من أصحابي أسيره حتى قدمنا على النبي ﷺ فذكرناه، فرفع النبي ﷺ يده فقال: اللهم إني أبرأ إليك مما صنع خالد مرتين.
Bukhari reported it in the Book of Military Expeditions (4339) via Mamar, from Zuhri, from Salim, from his father, who said, [narration follows]. And of similar meaning is what was reported from Imran bin Husayn, who said, Nafi bin Azraq and his companions came and said, "You are ruined, Imran." He said, "How am I ruined?" They said, "Indeed you are." He said, "What has ruined me?" They said, "Allah said, "Fight them until there is no more fitnah and religion belongs entirely to Allah" [Baqarah 2:193]." He said, "We fought them until we defeated them, and religion belonged entirely to Allah. If you wish, I will tell you a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." They said, "Did you hear it yourself from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said, "Yes. I witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ send an army of Muslims against the polytheists. When they met them, they fought fiercely, and the polytheists turned their backs and fled. A man from my clan charged at one of the polytheists with a spear. When he was about to strike him, the man said, 'I testify that there is no god but Allah, I am a Muslim,' but he stabbed him anyway and killed him. He then came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I am ruined.' He said, 'What have you done?' once or twice. So he told him what he had done. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, 'Why did you not split open his belly to see what was in his heart?' He said, 'O Messenger of Allah, if I had split open his belly, would I have known what was in his heart?' He said, 'Then you neither accepted what he said, nor did you know what was in his heart.'"He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then fell silent about him. Not long after, he died, and we buried him. In the morning we found him on the surface of the ground. We said, 'Perhaps some enemy dug him up.' So we buried him again, and we set our boys to guard him. In the morning we found him again on the surface of the ground. We said, 'Perhaps the boys fell asleep.' So we buried him again, and this time we guarded him ourselves, but in the morning he was again on the surface of the ground. So we cast him into one of those ravines."In another version, "The earth accepts those who are worse than him, but Allah wished to show you the gravity of violating the sanctity of 'there is no god but Allah.'"Ibn Majah reported it (3930) through two routes from Asim (that is, Ibn Sulayman Ahwal), from Sumayt bin Sumayr, from Imran bin Husayn, [narration follows]. But Sumayt did not hear it directly from Imran bin Husayn, there are two men between them, one of whom is unidentified. Ahmad reported it (19937) from Arim, from Mutamir bin Sulayman, from his father, from Sumayt Shaybani, from Abu Ala, from a man from the tribe, from Imran bin Husayn, [narration follows]. The man from the tribe is unidentified and unknown. As for Abu Ala, he is Yazid bin Abdullah bin Shikhir, a well-known reliable narrator.
