The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I have been sent with the sword so that Allah alone may be worshipped without partner. My provision has been placed under the shade of my spear, and humiliation and disgrace have been decreed for whoever opposes my command. Whoever imitates a people is one of them."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: بعثت بالسيف حتى يعبد الله لا شريك له، وجعل رزقي تحت ظل رمحي، وجعل الذلة والصغار على من خالف أمري، ومن تشبه بقوم فهو منهم.
Ahmad (5114) and Abu Dawud (4031) both narrated it through the route of Ibn Thawban, from Hassan bin Atiya, from Abu Munib Jurashi, from Ibn Umar, who related it. The wording given is Ahmad's. Abu Dawud limited his account to the saying, "Whoever imitates a people is one of them."Its chain is hasan because of Ibn Thawban, who is Abdul-Rahman bin Thabit bin Thawban. There is disagreement about him, but his hadith is hasan when he does not contradict others and does not bring something that would be rejected from him. It also contains Abu Munib Jurashi, whom Ajli deemed reliable, and whom Ibn Hibban mentioned among his reliable narrators. Shaykh al-Islam said in Iqtida Sirat Mustaqim (1/258), "This is a good chain."Tahawi also narrated it in Sharh Mushkil Athar (1/213) through the hadith of Walid bin Muslim, who said, "Uzai narrated to us," from Hassan bin Atiya, with the same wording. This chain is sahih. Walid bin Muslim is a mudallis, but he explicitly stated that he heard it directly, and this is the view that Daraqutni preferred in Ilal (1754). The hadith has other chains, but the ones I have mentioned are the most sahih among them. His saying, "I was sent with the sword," is clarified by his saying ﷺ, "I have been commanded to fight the people until they testify that there is no god but Allah."His saying, "My provision was placed under the shade of my spear," does not imply restriction, for the avenues of provision are many, and he ﷺ used to receive provision before jihad was made obligatory.
