The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever dies without having taken part in a military campaign, and without ever having intended to do so, dies upon a branch of hypocrisy."Abdullah bin Mubarak commented, "We consider this to have applied during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."
قال رسول الله ﷺ: من مات ولم يغز، ولم يحدث به نفسه مات على شعبة من نفاق. قال عبد الله بن المبارك: فنرى أن ذلك كان على عهد رسول الله ﷺ.
Muslim narrated it in the book of Leadership (1910:158), from Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman bin Sahm Antaki, who reported that Abdullah bin Mubarak told them, from Wahib Makki, from Umar bin Muhammad bin Munkadir, from Sumayy, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it.What Abdullah bin Mubarak said makes sense, because that was a time of jihad, and they did not have dedicated troops for military campaigns. As for what was reported from Abu Hurairah as a saying of the Prophet, "Whoever meets Allah without any trace of jihad meets Allah with a gap in him," its chain of transmission is daif. Tirmidhi narrated it (1666), as did Ibn Majah (2763), and Hakim (2/79), through various routes from Walid bin Muslim, from Ismail bin Rafi, from Sumayy the freed slave of Abu Bakr, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurairah, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said it, and he related it.Tirmidhi said, "This is a gharib hadith from the report of Walid bin Muslim, from Ismail bin Rafi. Ismail bin Rafi has been declared daif by some hadith scholars. I heard Muhammad say, he is reliable, close to sound in his transmission, and this hadith has been reported through a different route than this one from Abu Hurairah, from the Prophet ﷺ."I say, Ismail bin Rafi is daif, declared so by the majority of scholars, among them Ahmad, Ibn Main, Abu Hatim, Nasai, Fasawi, Ibn Adi, and Daraqutni. For this reason, Dhahabi in al-Mizan (2271) did not approve of what Tirmidhi said here.
