The Prophet ﷺ slept one day near me, then woke up smiling. I asked, "What is making you smile?"He said, "People of my nation were shown to me, riding upon this green sea like kings upon thrones."She said, "Pray to Allah to make me one of them."So he prayed for her. Then he slept a second time and did the same as before. She said the same as she had said, and he answered her the same. She said, "Pray to Allah to make me one of them."He said, "You are among the first."So she went out with her husband Ubada bin Samit as a warrior, on the first occasion the Muslims sailed the sea with Muawiya. When they returned from their campaign and disembarked in Sham, an animal was brought close for her to ride, but it threw her off and she died.
Bukhari narrated it in "Jihad and Expeditions" (2799, 2800), and Muslim in "Leadership" (1912:161), both through Yahya bin Saeed, from Muhammad bin Yahya bin Habban, from Anas bin Malik, from his aunt Umm Haram bint Milhan, and he mentioned it.Abu Dawud said, following hadith (2491), "Bint Milhan died in Cyprus."In Sahih Muslim it states, "Umm Haram bint Milhan sailed the sea in the time of Muawiya."I say, Umm Haram was among the mahrams of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, being one of his maternal aunts through breastfeeding, and she was from Banu Najjar, and the mother of Abdul-Muttalib was also from Banu Najjar. As for his statement, "in the time of Muawiya," this expression from the narrator is ambiguous. The correct account is that it was during the caliphate of Uthman, for the army that Uthman sent to Cyprus was led by Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan, and that was in the year twenty-seven. When she crossed the sea, she mounted an animal which threw her and killed her, and she was buried in Cyprus. As for his statement, "you are among the first," this is indeed what happened, for she was among the first army that set out by sea to Cyprus, after which expeditions by sea continued one after another.
