The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood on the pulpit and said, "What I fear most for you after I am gone is the worldly bounties that will be opened up for you from the earth."Then he mentioned the splendor of this world, beginning with one matter and following with another.A man stood up and asked, "Messenger of Allah, can good bring forth evil?"The Prophet ﷺ remained silent. We said, "Revelation is being sent down to him." The people fell silent as though birds were perched on their heads.Then he wiped the sweat from his face and asked, "Where is the one who asked just now?" He repeated this three times, then said, "Was it really good he asked about? Indeed, good only brings forth good. But everything that the spring growth produces either kills through bloating or comes close to it, except for the grazer of green herbs, which eats and eats, and when its flanks are filled, it faces the sun, passes dung and urine, then returns to graze.This wealth is sweet and green. What an excellent companion it is for the Muslim who takes it rightfully and spends it in the cause of Allah, on orphans, the poor, and travelers. But whoever takes it without right is like one who eats and is never satisfied, and it will bear witness against him on the Day of Resurrection."
أن رسول الله ﷺ قام على المنبر، فقال: إنما أخشى عليكم من بعدي ما يفتح عليكم من بركات الأرض، ثم ذكر زهرة الدنيا، فبدأ بإحداهما وثنى بالأخرى، فقام رجل فقال: يا رسول الله، أويأتي الخير بالشر؟ فسكت عنه النبي ﷺ، قلنا: يوحى إليه وسكت الناس كأن على رءوسهم الطير، ثم إنه مسح عن وجهه الرحضاء، فقال: أين السائل آنفا؟ أو خير هو، - ثلاثا-، إن الخير لا يأتي إلا بالخير، وإنه كلما ينبت الربيع ما يقتل حبطا أو يلم إلا آكلة الخضر كلما أكلت، حتى إذا امتلأت خاصرتاها استقبلت الشمس، فثلطت وبالت ثم رتعت، وإن هذا المال خضرة حلوة، ونعم صاحب المسلم لمن أخذه بحقه فجعله في سبيل الله واليتامى والمساكين وابن السبيل، ومن لم يأخذه بحقه فهو كالآكل الذي لا يشبع، ويكون عليه شهيدا يوم القيامة.
Bukhari narrated it in jihad (2842), and Muslim in zakat (1052:123), both through Hilal bin Abu Maymuna, from Ata bin Yasar, from Abu Saeed Khudri, who mentioned it.His saying "habatan" – habat means that livestock eat so excessively from the pasture that their bellies swell and become distended, which may sometimes lead to their death.His saying "yulimm" means it comes close to destruction.Azhari said, "This report, if reflected upon, is scarcely understood, and it contains two parables. One of them is given for the person who is excessive in accumulating worldly wealth and withholding it from its due right, and the other is given for the person who is moderate in taking it and benefiting from it.For his saying, 'Indeed, among what the spring rain causes to grow is that which kills by bloating,' is a parable for the excessive person who takes wealth without right. This is because the spring rain causes the choice herbs and grass to grow, and the livestock eat so excessively from them that their bellies swell, and once this exceeds the limit that can be tolerated, their intestines burst and they die. Likewise, the one who accumulates worldly wealth from other than its lawful sources, and withholds from the rightful person his due, perishes in the hereafter by entering the Fire.As for the parable of the moderate person, it is his saying ﷺ, 'Except the eater of green herbage...' to the end of it. This is because the eater of green herbage is not eating the choice herbs that the spring rain causes to grow, but rather the dry pasture that the livestock graze on after the herbs have withered. So the Prophet ﷺ gave the example of the livestock that eat green herbage as a parable for the one who is moderate in taking and accumulating worldly wealth, and whose greed does not drive him to take it without right, for he is saved from its harm just as the eater of green herbage was saved." etc.See Dibaj by Suyuti.
