The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There is no raiding party that goes out in the path of Allah and obtains spoils except that they have taken in advance two-thirds of their reward in the Hereafter, with one-third remaining for them. But if they obtain no spoils, their reward is complete for them."
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال: ما من غازية في سبيل الله فيصيبون الغنيمة إلا تعجلوا ثلثي أجرهم من الآخرة، يبقى لهم الثلث، وإن لم يصيبوا غنيمة تم لهم أجرهم.
Muslim narrated it in al-Imarah (1906:153) from Abd bin Humayd, who said, Abdullah bin Yazid Abu Abdul-Rahman narrated to us, who said, Haywa bin Shurayh narrated to us, from Abu Hani, from Abu Abdul-Rahman Hubli, from Abdullah bin Amr, and he mentioned it.This hadith of Abdullah bin Amr bin As contradicts the general sense of the hadiths on the merit of jihad, so scholars have taken two positions.The first is to weaken the hadith of Abdullah bin Amr, since among its narrators is Abu Hani Khawlani, Humayd bin Hani Misri, who is not well known and was not corroborated by anyone else. A truthful narrator whose reliability is questioned among the hadith scholars narrating alone is already a matter open to scrutiny, and when such a narration also contradicts the general body of hadiths, the likelihood of weakness increases further.The second is to interpret the general hadiths on the merit of jihad as applying to one who goes out for jihad with sincerity, seeking the pleasure of Allah Almighty, while interpreting the hadith of Abdullah bin Amr as applying to one who goes to war intending to gain spoils. Such a person receives two-thirds of his reward from the Hereafter in advance if he gains spoils, with one-third remaining for him, but if he does not gain spoils, his reward is complete.
