Someone asked, "Messenger of Allah, who are the best of people?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "A believer who strives in the path of Allah with his life and his wealth."They asked, "Then who?"He said, "A believer in one of the mountain passes who fears Allah and spares people from his harm."
قيل: يا رسول الله، أي الناس أفضل؟ فقال رسول الله ﷺ: مؤمن يجاهد في سبيل الله بنفسه وماله، وقالوا: ثم من؟ قال: مؤمن في شعب من الشعاب يتقي الله، ويدع الناس من شره.
Bukhari narrated it in jihad (2786), and Muslim in leadership (1888:122), both through chains of transmission from Zuhri, from Ata bin Yazid Laythi, from Abu Saeed Khudri, who related it.
