When he passed away, meaning Umar bin Khattab, we carried him out and proceeded on foot. Abdullah bin Umar gave the greeting of peace and said, "Umar bin Khattab seeks permission to enter."She replied, "Bring him in."He was brought in and laid to rest there alongside his two companions. Once the burial was complete, this group of men gathered together.Abdul-Rahman said, "Entrust your affair to three among you."Zubayr said, "I have entrusted my affair to Ali."Talha said, "I have entrusted my affair to Uthman."Saad said, "I have entrusted my affair to Abdul-Rahman bin Awf."Then Abdul-Rahman said, "Which of you two will withdraw from this matter, so that we may assign it to the other? By Allah and Islam, he must consider who is the most deserving among them."The two elders fell silent.Abdul-Rahman said, "Will you then entrust the matter to me? By Allah, I will not fall short of choosing the best among you."They said, "Yes."He took the hand of one of them and said, "You have kinship with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and precedence in Islam, as you well know. Allah is your witness, if I appoint you, you must rule justly, and if I appoint Uthman, you must listen and obey."Then he took the other aside privately and said the same to him. Once he had taken the pledge from them, he said, "Raise your hand, Uthman," and he pledged allegiance to him. Ali then pledged allegiance to him, and the people of the house entered and pledged allegiance to him as well.
