The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Alqama bin Mujazziz on a military expedition, and I was among the troops. When he reached the destination of his campaign, or when he was somewhere along the way, a group from the army asked his permission to set out separately. He gave them permission and placed Abdullah bin Huzafa bin Qays al-Sahmi in command over them. I was among those who went on that expedition with him. While we were on our way, the men kindled a fire to warm themselves or to cook something on it. Abdullah, who had a playful streak, said, "Do I not have the right to your hearing and obedience?"They replied, "Yes, of course."He said, "If I command you to do anything, will you not do it?"They said, "Yes."He said, "Then I order you to jump into this fire."Some men stood up and tucked up their garments. When he saw they were about to leap in, he said, "Hold yourselves back. I was only joking with you."When we returned, they mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever among them commands you to disobey Allah, do not obey him."
Ibn Majah (2863), Ahmad (11639), and Ibn Hibban (4558) all narrated it through the route of Muhammad bin Amr, from Umar bin Hakam bin Thawban, from Abu Saeed Khudri, who related it.Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Muhammad bin Amr (he is Ibn Alqama) and Umar bin Hakam bin Thawban, for both of them make the hadith hasan. Busiri also graded its chain sahih in Misbah Zujaja.
