Abu Musa reported, "I came to the Prophet ﷺ accompanied by two men from the Ashari tribe, one on my right and the other on my left, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was using a tooth-stick. Both of them requested an appointment to a position while the Prophet was still using the tooth-stick.He asked, "What do you say, Abu Musa?" or "Abdullah bin Qays?"I replied, "By the One who sent you with the truth, they did not inform me of what was in their hearts, and I had no idea they were seeking an appointment."It is as though I can still see his tooth-stick beneath his lip, which had drawn back. He said, "We will never," or "We do not appoint to our work anyone who seeks it. But you go, Abu Musa," or "Abdullah bin Qays."So he sent him to Yemen, then sent Muaz bin Jabal after him. When Muaz arrived to him, Abu Musa said, "Dismount," and laid out a cushion for him. There was a man bound in fetters beside him.Muaz asked, "Who is this?"Abu Musa replied, "This man was a Jew, then he embraced Islam, then he reverted to his former evil religion and became a Jew again."Muaz said, "I will not sit down until he is killed. This is the judgment of Allah and His Messenger."Abu Musa said, "Sit down, of course."Muaz repeated, "I will not sit down until he is killed. This is the judgment of Allah and His Messenger," three times. So Abu Musa ordered that he be executed, and he was killed. Then the two of them discussed standing in prayer at night, and one of them, Muaz, said, "As for me, I sleep and I rise, and I hope for the same reward in my sleeping as I hope for in my standing."
Bukhari related it in "The Retraction of Apostates" (6923), and Muslim in "Leadership" (1733:15), both through the route of Yahya Qattan, who said, "Qurra bin Khalid narrated to us, saying, Humayd bin Hilal narrated to us, saying, Abu Burda narrated to me, saying, Abu Musa said..." and he mentioned it. The wording given is Muslim's.
