I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Whoever drinks wine, his prayer will not be accepted for forty nights. If he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. If he drinks it a second time, his prayer will not be accepted for forty nights. If he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. If he drinks it a third time, his prayer will not be accepted for forty nights. If he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. If he drinks it a fourth time, his prayer will not be accepted for forty nights, and if he repents, Allah will not accept his repentance, and it will be Allah's right to make him drink from the mire of khabal."Someone asked, "What is the mire of khabal?"He replied, "The pus of the people of the Fire."
Bayhaqi narrated it in Shuab (5191), and this is his wording, and Tabarani in Kabir (12/392), both of them through Hammad bin Zayd, who said, Ata bin Saaib narrated to us, from Abdullah bin Ubayd bin Umayr, that Ibn Umar said, then he related it. Its isnad is sahih. Ata bin Saaib is trustworthy, though his memory became confused in his later years, but Hammad bin Zayd is among those who heard from him early on, before the confusion set in. Also, a number of narrators corroborated him, and through their route it was narrated by Tirmidhi (1862), Abdul-Razzaq (10758), Ahmad (4917), Abu Yaala (5686), and Tabarani (12/390), all of them through the route of Ata bin Saaib, with the same meaning, though some of them related it in abridged form. This confirms that he did not err in this hadith.Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan hadith."In the same meaning is what was narrated from Ibn Abbas, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said, "Every intoxicant is wine, and every intoxicant is forbidden. Whoever drinks an intoxicant, his prayer is diminished for forty mornings, but if he repents, Allah accepts his repentance. If he returns to it a fourth time, it becomes incumbent upon Allah to give him to drink from the mud of Khabal." It was asked, "What is the mud of Khabal, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "The discharge of the people of the Fire. And whoever gives it to drink to a child who does not yet distinguish what is lawful for him from what is unlawful, it becomes incumbent upon Allah to give him to drink from the mud of Khabal."Abu Dawud narrated it (3680) from Muhammad bin Rafi Nisaburi, who said, Ibrahim bin Umar Sanani narrated to us, who said, I heard Numan bin Abu Shayba, in the printed edition it reads "Ibn Bashir," which is an error, from Tawus, from Ibn Abbas, then he related it.Bayhaqi also narrated it (8/288) through the route of Abu Dawud, with the same wording. In it is Ibrahim bin Umar Sanani, whom no one has declared trustworthy, and for this reason Hafiz said, "He is obscure." Abu Zura was asked about him and said, "This is a munkar hadith." Ibn Abu Hatim noted this defect (2/36).
