When the prohibition of wine was being revealed, Umar prayed, "Allah, give us a clear ruling about wine that settles the matter."Then the verse in Baqarah was revealed, "They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, in both there is sin" [Baqarah 2:219].Umar was summoned and it was recited to him, and he said, "Allah, give us a clear ruling about wine that settles the matter."Then the verse in Nisa was revealed, "You who believe, do not approach the prayer while you are intoxicated" [Nisa 4:43]. So whenever the prayer was called, the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ announcer would call out, "Let no one who is drunk come near the prayer."Umar was summoned and it was recited to him, and he said, "Allah, give us a clear ruling about wine that settles the matter."Then this verse was revealed, "So will you not then abstain?" [Maidah 5:91].Umar said, "We have abstained."
Abu Dawud (3670), Tirmidhi (3049), Nasai (5540), Ahmad (378), Hakim (4/143), and Diya Maqdisi in Mukhtarah (256) all narrated it through various routes from Israil bin Yunus bin Abu Ishaq Subayi, from Abu Ishaq, from Abu Maysara Amr bin Shurahbil, from Umar, and he related it.Hakim said, "The isnad is sahih," and this is as he said, except that there is disagreement over whether Abu Maysara heard directly from Umar. Bukhari, Abu Hatim, and Muslim affirmed that he did, while Abu Zura said, "His hadith from Umar is mursal." See Marasil by Ibn Abu Hatim (516). The one who affirms is given precedence over the one who denies, as is well established among the people of knowledge.Tirmidhi also faulted it for being mursal, saying after the hadith, "This hadith has also been narrated from Israil as mursal." He then narrated it through the route of Waki, from Israil, from Abu Ishaq, from Abu Maysara Amr bin Shurahbil, that Umar bin Khattab said, "O Allah, give us a clear, healing explanation about wine," and he related it in similar wording.Tirmidhi said, "This is more sahih than the hadith of Muhammad bin Yusuf," meaning his statement "from Umar bin Khattab." But there is something questionable in what he said, for Muhammad bin Yusuf was not alone in saying that. Rather, more than one narrator corroborated him in it, among them Ismail bin Jafar as narrated by Abu Dawud, Ubaydullah bin Musa as narrated by Nasai, Khalaf bin Walid as narrated by Ahmad, and Yahya bin Abu Bukayr as narrated by Diya, among others.Furthermore, Israil was also corroborated in his statement "from Umar," being followed in this by Zakariya bin Abu Zaida and Sufyan Thawri, as mentioned by Daraqutni in Ilal, question (207), where he pointed to some disagreement over it regarding Abu Ishaq, then said, "The correct view is that of the one who said, 'from Abu Ishaq, from Abu Maysara, from Umar.'"
