On the day of Khaybar, we slaughtered horses, mules, and donkeys. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us from eating mules and donkeys, but he did not forbid us from eating horses.
ذبحنا يوم خيبر الخيل، والبغال، والحمير، فنهانا رسول الله ﷺ عن البغال، والحمير، ولم ينهنا عن الخيل.
Abu Dawud (3789), Ahmad (14840), Ibn Hibban (5272), and Hakim (4/235) narrated it through several routes from Hammad bin Salama, from Abu Zubayr, from Jabir, who related it.Hakim added in his chain, "from Abu Zubayr and Amr bin Dinar." Its narrators are reliable, and Hakim said, "Sahih according to the standard of Muslim, though the two of them did not include it."There is some question regarding what he said. Yes, the two of them did not include it with this wording, but they did include it, as mentioned earlier, through the route of Amr bin Dinar, from Muhammad bin Ali, from Jabir. Muslim also narrated it through the route of Ibn Jurayj, from Abu Zubayr, from Jabir. In both of these routes there is the prohibition of donkey meat and the permission of horse meat, but neither of them mentions the meat of mules. It has become clear from the narration in the Sahihayn that Amr bin Dinar, as in Hakim's route, did not hear it directly from Jabir, but rather there was an intermediary between them.
