We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Marr al-Zahran picking kabath berries when he said, "Take the black ones, for they are the best."Someone asked, "Did you used to herd sheep?"He replied, "Yes. And was there ever a prophet who did not herd them?"
كنا مع رسول الله ﷺ بمرالظهران نجني الكباث، فقال: عليكم بالأسود منه، فإنه أيطب، فقيل: أ كنت ترعى الغنم؟ قال: نعم. وهل من نبي إلا رعاها.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Foods (5453), and Muslim in the Book of Drinks (2050), both through Abdullah bin Wahb, from Yunus, from Ibn Shihab, from Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman, from Jabir bin Abdullah, who related it.As for his saying "kabath," it refers to the ripe fruit of the arak tree, its seed being slightly larger than a coriander seed in size, as stated in Mujam Wasit.
