The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, no one from this nation, whether Jew or Christian, hears of me and then dies without believing in what I have been sent with, except that he will be among the people of the Fire."
عن رسول الله ﷺ قال: والذي نفس محمد بيده لا يسمع بي أحد من هذه الأمة يهودي ولا نصراني، ثم يموت ولم يؤمن بالذي أرسلت به إلا كان من أصحاب النار.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Faith (153), from Yunus bin Abdul-Ala, who said, Ibn Wahb informed us, he said, and Amr informed me that Abu Yunus told him, on the authority of Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned the same. And in similar meaning it has been narrated from Abu Musa Ashari, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said, "Whoever among my nation, or a Jew, or a Christian, hears of me and does not believe in me, will not enter Paradise." Except that there is a break in its chain. It was narrated by Imam Ahmad (19536, 19562), and Bazzar in Kashf Astar (16), and Ibn Hibban in his Sahih (4880), all of them from the hadith of Shuba, from Abu Bishr, who said, I heard Saeed bin Jubayr narrate, on the authority of Abu Musa Ashari, the same. Its chain of transmission is daif because of the break, since Saeed bin Jubayr never heard from Abu Musa, for he was born in the year 46H, while Abu Musa died around the year fifty.Bazzar said, "We do not know of anyone who narrated it from the Prophet ﷺ except Abu Musa through this chain, and I do not think Saeed heard from Abu Musa." I say, the hadith of Abu Hurairah has already been mentioned, and it is found in the Sahih. As for the statement of Haythami in Majma (8/261), "Tabarani and Ahmad narrated it with similar wording in both narrations, and the men of Ahmad's chain are the men of the Sahih, and Bazzar also narrated it in abridged form," this is as he said, except that he did not point out the break in the chain, as can be understood from his statement that the men of Tabarani's chain are not the men of the Sahih.A note of caution, the hadith was corrupted in Sahih Ibn Hibban into, "Whoever hears a Jew or a Christian will enter the Fire." And he placed a chapter heading over it saying, mention of the obligation of entering the Fire for one who lets the People of the Book hear what they dislike. This contains a major error, which Ibn Hajar pointed out in Ithaf Mahra (10/24–25), where he said, he placed a chapter heading over it saying, the obligation of entering the Fire for one who lets the People of the Book hear what they dislike, and this deserves serious scrutiny, for it is a mistake that arose from a scribal corruption. The wording of this hadith is, "Whoever among my nation, or a Jew, or a Christian, hears of me and does not believe in me, will enter the Fire." This is how Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba related it in his Musnad, from Affan, from Shuba, who said, Abu Bishr narrated to us, I heard Saeed bin Jubayr narrate, on the authority of Abu Musa, from the Prophet ﷺ, with this wording. Ahmad also narrated it in his Musnad, from Muhammad bin Jafar, and from Affan, from Shuba, from Abu Bishr, with the same wording. So this is the actual hadith, and it seems that the version that reached Ibn Hibban was abridged as, "Whoever hears of me and does not believe will enter the Fire, whether a Jew or a Christian." It was then corrupted for him, and he placed his chapter heading based on the corrupted wording, thus falling into a major error.
