The Prophet ﷺ found a dead sheep that had been given as charity to a freedwoman of Maymunah. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Why did you not make use of its hide?"They replied, "It is dead."He said, "Only eating it has been prohibited."
وجد النبي ﷺ شاة ميتة أعطيتها مولاة لميمونة من الصدقة، قال النبي ﷺ: هلا انتفعتم بجلدها. قالوا: إنها ميتة. قال: إنما حرم أكلها.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Zakat (1492), and Muslim in the Book of Menstruation (363:101), both of them through the route of Ibn Wahb, who said, Yunus informed me, from Ibn Shihab, Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utba narrated to me, from Ibn Abbas, and he related it.Malik narrated it in the Book of Hunting (16) from Ibn Shihab with the same account. Muslim (363:100) added, through routes from Sufyan bin Uyayna, from Zuhri with the same account, his saying, "Why did you not take its hide, tan it, and benefit from it?" He also added, in some of the routes from Sufyan with the same account, from Ibn Abbas, from Maymuna.Daraqutni (1/42) added, and from his route Bayhaqi (1/20), from the hadith of Amr bin Rabi bin Tariq, who said, Yahya bin Ayub narrated to us, from Aqeel, from Zuhri with the same account, "Or is there not in water and tanning something that purifies it?" And in another wording, "Or is there not in water and qaraz something that purifies it?"Its chain is hasan because of Yahya bin Ayub Ghafiqi Misri, for although he is among the narrators found in the two Sahihs, there is some criticism of him, but his hadith is hasan, and the rest of his narrators are reliable.Qaraz is a tree used for tanning, and it is also said to be the leaf of the samur tree used for tanning hides. Abu Hanifa said, qaraz is the best material for tanning hides in the land of the Arabs, and they tan with its leaf and its fruit.
