Reported by Abu Dawud (2822), Nasai (4313), Ibn Majah (3175), and Ahmad (15870), and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (5887), all of them through routes from Asim Ahwal, from Shaybi, from Muhammad bin Safwan, who mentioned it. Its chain is sahih.Asim Ahwal reported it this way, from Shaybi, from Muhammad bin Safwan, and Dawud bin Abu Hind followed him in this. Reported by Nasai (4411), Ibn Majah (3244), and Ahmad (15871), and Hakim graded it sahih (4/235), saying, "According to the criterion of Muslim."Qatada differed from both of them, reporting it from Shaybi, from Jabir bin Abdullah, with similar wording. Reported by Tirmidhi (1472) and Bayhaqi (9/321) through the route of Saeed bin Abu Aruba, from Qatada, with this wording.Tirmidhi said, "The companions of Shaybi differed regarding the transmission of this hadith. Dawud bin Abu Hind reported it from Shaybi, from Muhammad bin Safwan. Asim Ahwal reported it from Shaybi, from Safwan bin Muhammad or Muhammad bin Safwan, and Muhammad bin Safwan is more sahih. Jabir Jafi reported it from Shaybi, from Jabir bin Abdullah, similar to the hadith of Qatada from Shaybi, and it is possible that Shaybi reported it from both of them. Muhammad, meaning Bukhari, said, 'The hadith of Shaybi from Jabir bin Abdullah is not preserved.'"He added, in Ilal al-Kabir (2/630), from the statement of Bukhari, "The hadith of Muhammad bin Safwan is more sahih."
