A son of Abu Talha was sick. Abu Talha went out, and the boy passed away. When Abu Talha returned, he asked, "How is my son?"Umm Sulaym replied, "He is calmer than he has been." She brought him his dinner, and he ate. Then he was intimate with her. When he had finished, she said, "Bury the boy."In the morning, Abu Talha went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him what had happened. The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Did you consummate together last night?"Abu Talha answered, "Yes."The Prophet ﷺ said, "O Allah, bless them in their night."She gave birth to a boy. Abu Talha said to me, "Look after him until you bring him to the Prophet ﷺ." So he was brought to the Prophet ﷺ, and she sent some dates along with him.The Prophet ﷺ took him and asked, "Is there anything with him?"They said, "Yes, some dates."The Prophet ﷺ took the dates, chewed them, then took some from his mouth and placed it in the child's mouth, rubbing it on his palate. He named him Abdullah.
Bukhari narrated it in the Chapter on Aqeeqah (5470), and Muslim in the Chapter on Manners (23:2144), both through Yazid bin Harun, who said, "Abdullah bin Awn informed us, from Anas bin Sirin, from Anas bin Malik," and he related it. The wording given here is Bukhari's.Then Bukhari added another chain through Ibn Abu Adi, from Ibn Awn, from Muhammad (meaning Ibn Sirin), from Anas, who said, "And he related the hadith."Bukhari's statement, "And he related the hadith," refers to the hadith he recorded in the Book of Clothing (5824), from Muhammad bin Muthanna, who said, "Ibn Abu Adi narrated to me, from Ibn Awn, from Muhammad, from Anas, who said, 'When Umm Salim gave birth, she said to me, "Anas, watch over this boy and let nothing happen to him until you take him in the morning to the Prophet ﷺ so he can chew something for him." So I took him in the morning and found the Prophet ﷺ in a garden, wearing a khamisa cloak of Hareethi make, marking the riding animal he had received in the conquest.'"This is the hadith Bukhari means. Bukhari related this story in other places through other chains in abridged form, and it is a single hadith with some variation in wording. However, Abdullah bin Ahmad recorded the story in full (12865).Abu Abdul-Rahman said, "I read this hadith to my father, and he acknowledged it as his."And he narrated part of it to us in another place, saying, "Musa bin Hilal Abdi narrated to us, Hammam narrated to us, from Ibn Sirin, from Anas bin Malik, who said,'Abu Talha married Umm Salim, who was the mother of Anas and Bara. She bore him a son, and he loved him dearly. Then the boy fell seriously ill. Abu Talha would rise for the morning prayer, perform ablution, go to the Prophet ﷺ, pray with him, and stay with him until nearly midday. Then he would come back, take a nap, and eat. When he had prayed Dhuhr, he would prepare himself and go out again, and would not return until the night prayer. He went out one evening, and the boy died. When Abu Talha came home, she covered him with a cloth and left him as he was.Abu Talha said to her, "Umm Salim, how did my son fare tonight?" She said, "Abu Talha, your son has not been calmer than he was tonight since he fell ill." Then she brought him food, and he ate and felt at ease.He then went to his bed and laid down his head.' She said, 'I got up and applied some perfume, then came and got into bed with him. No sooner had he caught the scent of the perfume than what happens between a man and his wife happened between us.In the morning Abu Talha got ready as he did every day.' She said, 'I said to him, "Abu Talha, tell me, if a man entrusted you with something for safekeeping, and you made use of it, and then he asked for it back and took it from you, would you be upset about that?" He said, "No." I said, "Then know that your son has died."'Anas said, 'He grieved deeply over him, and he told the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what had happened with the food and the perfume, and what had passed between him and her.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Is that so? You spent the night together as bride and groom while he lay beside you?" He said, "Yes, Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "May Allah bless the two of you in your night."'Umm Salim conceived that very night, and she gave birth to a boy. When morning came, Abu Talha said to me, "Carry him wrapped in a cloth and take him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and take some ajwa dates with you."So I carried him wrapped in a cloth. Nothing had yet been chewed for him, and he had not tasted any food at all. I said, "Messenger of Allah, Umm Salim has given birth." He said, "Allah is greatest, what did she bear?" I said, "A boy." He said, "Praise be to Allah." Then he said, "Bring him to me." So I handed him over, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ chewed something for him. Then he said, "Do you have any ajwa dates with you?" I said, "Yes," and I brought out some dates. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took a date, put it in his mouth, and kept chewing it until it mixed with his saliva, then placed it in the boy's mouth. No sooner had the boy tasted the sweetness of the date than he began sucking at the sweetness of the date mixed with the saliva of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.'"Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Musa bin Hilal Abdi, about whom there is disagreement. Abu Hatim said, "Unknown," and Aqeeli said, "His hadith is not corroborated." But Ibn Adi said, "I hope there is no harm in him," and he is one of the narrators mentioned in Tajil. I say, a group of narrators reported from him, including Imam Ahmad, so someone of his standing has his hadith graded hasan.Ahmad also narrated it (12031) in abridged form from him, saying, "Hisham narrated to us, from Ibn Sirin, from Anas bin Malik," and he related it. Here he made Musa bin Hilal's teacher Hisham, that is, Ibn Hassan. So either Musa bin Hilal narrated from two teachers, which seems to be the case, or he erred in one of the two instances. Allah, exalted is He, knows best.It becomes clear from all this that it is a single hadith, though some narrators related it at length while others abridged it. Ibn Hajar, however, said in Fath al-Bari (9/589–590), "They are two separate hadiths."
