A man called out to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "During the days of ignorance, we used to offer the atirah sacrifice in Rajab. What do you command us to do?"He replied, "Sacrifice for Allah in whatever month it may be, show devotion to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and feed others."The man said, "And we used to offer the firstborn sacrifice during the days of ignorance. What do you command us regarding that?"He replied, "For every grazing herd, there is a firstborn. Let your livestock nurse it until, when it is fit to be ridden by pilgrims, you slaughter it and give its meat in charity."Khalid said, "I believe he said, 'to the wayfarer, for that is better.'"Khalid said, I asked Abu Qilaba, "How many makes a grazing herd?"He replied, "One hundred."
نادى رجل رسول الله ﷺ: إنا كنا نعتر عتيرة في الجاهلية في رجب فما تأمرنا؟ قال: اذبحوا الله في أي شهر كان، وبروا الله عزوجل وأطعموا. قال: إنا كنا نفرع فرعا في الجاهلية فما تأمرنا؟ قال: في كل سائمة فرع تغذوه ماشيتك حتى إذا استحمل للحجيج ذبحته فتصدقت بلحمه. قال خالد: أحسبه قال على ابن السبيل؛ فإن ذلك خير. قال خالد: قلت لأبي قلابة: كم السائمة؟ قال: مائة.
Reported by Abu Dawud (2830), Nasai (4231), Ibn Majah (3167), Imam Ahmad (20723), and Hakim (4/235) through various routes from Khalid (that is, Ibn Mihran Hadhdha), from Abu Malih, from Nubaysha, as related above. The wording given is that of Abu Dawud, and Ahmad added at the end the hadith granting permission to eat sacrificial meat beyond three days.In a version of Nasai (4232), from Khalid, who said, "Abu Qilaba narrated to me, from Abu Malih. Then I met Abu Malih myself and asked him, and he narrated to me from Nubaysha Huzali." Abu Qilaba is Abdullah bin Zayd Jarmi.The hadith's isnad is sahih, and Nubaysha Huzali is a companion with few narrations. Hakim said, its isnad is sahih.
