I attended the Eid al-Adha prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the prayer ground. When he finished his sermon, he descended from his pulpit, and a ram was brought to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ slaughtered it with his own hand and said, "In the name of Allah, and Allah is the greatest. This is on behalf of myself and on behalf of those of my community who did not offer a sacrifice."
Reported by Abu Dawud (2810), Tirmidhi (1521), and Imam Ahmad (14895), all of them from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, Yaqub bin Abdul-Rahman narrated to us, from Amr bin Abu Amr, from Muttalib, from Jabir bin Abdullah, and he mentioned it. Imam Ahmad (14837) also reported it through Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Zinad, from Amr bin Abu Amr, with the same wording. Its chain is hasan, because of Muttalib, who is Ibn Abdullah bin Hantab Qurashi Makhzumi Madani, for he is truthful and his hadith is hasan.Although some of the imams have questioned whether he heard directly from Jabir, Abu Hatim Razi stated at one point definitively that "he did not hear from him," and at another time said, "it seems likely that he met Jabir." Bukhari said, "I do not know of Muttalib bin Hantab having heard directly from any of the companions except his statement, 'someone who witnessed the sermon of the Prophet ﷺ narrated to me.'" Tirmidhi said, "I heard Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman (meaning Darimi) say the same." See Jami Tahsil, pages 281-282.For this reason, Tirmidhi said following this hadith, "This is a gharib hadith from this angle, and the practice among the people of knowledge from the companions of the Prophet ﷺ and others is that a man should say when slaughtering, 'In the name of Allah, Allah is greatest.' This is the view of Ibn Mubarak. Muttalib bin Abdullah bin Hantab is said not to have heard from Jabir."I say, however, his explicit statement of having heard from him does occur in Hakim (4/229) and in Tahawi's Sharh Maani (4/177-178), for they both reported it through the route of Ibn Wahb, who said, Yahya bin Abdullah bin Salim and Yaqub bin Abdul-Rahman informed me, from Amr, the freedman of Muttalib, from Muttalib bin Abdullah, and from a man of Banu Salama, that the two of them narrated to him that Jabir bin Abdullah informed them that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed with the people on the Day of Sacrifice... the hadith. Its narrators are trustworthy, except for Muttalib, who is truthful as mentioned before, and the unnamed man does no harm since he is joined with another narrator.
