We were with Abu Musa when he called for his table, on which there was chicken meat. A man from Banu Taym Allah, red-faced, resembling the freed slaves, came in.Abu Musa said to him, "Come and eat."The man hesitated, so Abu Musa said, "Come on, for I have seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ eat from it."The man replied, "I saw it eating something I found disgusting, so I swore I would never eat it."Abu Musa said, "Come, let me tell you about that. I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a group of the Asharis, asking him to provide us with mounts. He said, 'By Allah, I will not give you mounts, and I have nothing to mount you on.'We waited as long as Allah willed, then some captured camels were brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He called for us and ordered that we be given five camels with white humps. When we set off, we said to one another, 'We made the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forget his oath. There will be no blessing for us.'So we returned to him and said, 'Messenger of Allah, we came to you asking you for mounts, and you swore you would not give us mounts, then you gave us mounts. Did you forget, Messenger of Allah?'He said, 'By Allah, if Allah wills, I do not swear an oath and then see something better than it without doing what is better and breaking my oath. So go on, for it is only Allah who has given you the mounts.'"
Bukhari related it in the Book of the Obligation of Khumus (3133) and Muslim in the Book of Oaths (9:1649), both from the hadith of Hammad bin Zayd, from Ayub, from Abu Qilaba, and from Qasim bin Asim, from Zahdam Jarmi. Ayub said, "I remember the hadith of Qasim better than I remember the hadith of Abu Qilaba." He said, then he related the hadith.Yahya bin Abu Kathir differed from him, relating it from Abu Qilaba, from his uncle, from Imran bin Husayn, who said, Abu Musa Ashari came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking him to provide a mount for some men of his people, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, then he related the hadith. In it appears, "O Messenger of Allah, you had sworn an oath." He said, "Even if I had sworn an oath."Ibn Hibban related it in his Sahih (4351) by way of Uzai, from Yahya bin Abu Kathir, in this manner, and this is shadhdh (anomalous) both in its chain of transmission and in its meaning.
