The Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard the voices of two disputants at the door, raised in argument. One of them was asking the other to reduce what was owed and to be lenient with him in some matter, while the other was saying, "By Allah, I will not do it."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to them and said, "Where is the one swearing by Allah that he will not do a good deed?"The man said, "It is I, Messenger of Allah, and he may have whichever of those he prefers."
سمع رسول الله ﷺ صوت خصوم بالباب عالية أصواتهما، وإذا أحدهما يستوضع الآخر ويسترفقه في شيء وهو يقول: والله لا أفعل، فخرج عليهما رسول الله ﷺ فقال: أين المتألي على الله لا يفعل المعروف؟ فقال: أنا يا رسول الله، وله أي ذلك أحب.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Reconciliation (2705), and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Sharecropping and Agriculture (19:1557), through the route of Ismail bin Abu Uways, who said, my brother told me, from Sulayman (who is Ibn Bilal), from Yahya bin Saeed, from Abu Rijal Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman, that his mother Amra bint Abdul-Rahman said, I heard Ayesha, and she related it.His saying, "yastawdiu" means he asks him for a reduction, that is, a lessening of the debt. His saying, "yastarfiquhu" means he asks him for leniency toward him. His saying, "al-mutaali" means one who swears excessively in his oath, taken from "al-aliyyah" (with fatha on the hamza, kasrah on the lam, and doubling of the ya), which means the oath.
