A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Last night I saw in a dream..."Abu Bakr said, "Messenger of Allah, by my father, by Allah, do let me interpret it."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Interpret it."When Abu Bakr had interpreted it, the Prophet ﷺ said, "You got some of it right and some of it wrong."Abu Bakr said, "By Allah, you must tell me what I got wrong."The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Do not swear an oath."
إن رجلا أتى النبي ﷺ فقال: إني رأيت الليلة في المنام… فقال أبو بكر: يا رسول الله بأبي أنت والله لتدعني فأعبرها، فقال النبي ﷺ: اعبر فلما عبر قال: أصبت بعضا وأخطأت بعضا فقال: فوالله لتحدثني بالذي أخطأت، قال: لا تقسم.
Bukhari narrated it in the book of dream interpretation (7046) and Muslim in the book of dreams (2269), both from the hadith of Yunus, from Ibn Shihab, that Ubaydullah bin Abdullah bin Utba informed him that Ibn Abbas used to relate that a man... and he mentioned it in a long hadith. It is discussed in its proper place.As for his statement, "Do not swear," meaning do not take an oath, merely saying "I swear" or "I have sworn" does not constitute an oath unless it is coupled with the name of Allah. That is why the Prophet ﷺ did not command Abu Bakr to fulfill it. The scholars differ on this matter, and the issue is discussed at length in the books of jurisprudence, as well as in Fath al-Bari (11/542).As for what was narrated from Ayesha, that she said, a woman gave her dates on a tray as a gift, so she ate some and some remained. She said, "I swear you must eat the rest of it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Release her from her oath, for the sin falls upon the one who breaks the oath." This is munqati (a hadith with a broken chain).Ahmad narrated it (24825) and Abu Dawud in Maraseel (378), both from the hadith of Muawiya bin Salih, from Abu Zahiriya, and Abu Dawud paired him with Rashid bin Saad, from Ayesha, and he related it.Abu Zahiriya did not hear from Ayesha, and Rashid bin Saad is described as one who frequently transmitted with broken chains (mursal). Bayhaqi (10/41) also faulted it for being mursal.
