The Prophet ﷺ entered Mecca in the year of the Conquest wearing a helmet on his head. When he removed it, a man came and said, "Ibn Khatal is clinging to the curtains of the Kaabah."He said, "Kill him."
أن النبي ﷺ دخل مكة عام الفتح، وعلى رأسه المغفرة. فلما نزعه جاء رجل فقال: ابن خطل متعلق بأستار الكعبة فقال: اقتلوه.
Malik narrated it in the chapter on Hajj (262), from Ibn Shihab, from Anas bin Malik, and mentioned it as such. Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on jihad (3044) and Muslim in the chapter on Hajj (1357), both from the hadith of Malik bin Anas, and mentioned it as such.The historians of the military expeditions mentioned that his crime was that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had appointed him over the collection of charity and assigned a man to serve him. He grew angry at his companion because the man had not prepared food he had ordered him to make, so he killed him. Then, fearing he would be killed for this, he apostatized and drove off the charity camels. He also used to compose poetry satirizing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and would order his two slave girls to sing it. Waqidi mentioned this in his Maghazi (2/859–860), as did Ibn Hisham in his Sirah (4/51–52). This accursed man thus combined three crimes, each of which makes shedding blood lawful, killing a person, apostasy, and satirizing the Prophet.
