I used to write down everything I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, wanting to memorize it. But Quraysh forbade me, saying, "Do not write down everything you hear from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ is a human being who speaks in anger and in pleasure."So I stopped writing, and I mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He pointed with his finger to his mouth and said, "Write. By the One in whose hand my soul is, nothing comes out of it except the truth."
كنت أكتب كل شيء أسمعه من رسول الله ﷺ أريد حفظه فنهتني قريش، وقالوا: لا تكتب كل شيء تسمعه من رسول الله ﷺ، ورسول الله ﷺ بشر يتكلم في الغضب والرضا، فأمسكت عن الكتاب فذكرت ذلك لرسول الله ﷺ فأومأ بإصبعه إلى فيه، فقال: اكتب، فوالذي نفسي بيده ما يخرج منه إلا حق.
Abu Dawud (3646) reported it from Musaddad and Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, who both said, Yahya narrated to us, from Ubaydullah bin Akhnas, from Walid bin Abdullah bin Abu Mughith, from Yusuf bin Mahak, from Abdullah bin Amr, who said (he then mentioned it).Abu Dawud said, Muammal bin Fadl narrated to us, Walid narrated to us, I said to Abu Amr, and its isnad is sahih, and Yahya is Ibn Saeed Qattan. Imam Ahmad also reported it from him (6510), as did Hakim (1/105-106), who said, "The narrators of this hadith have all been relied upon [by Bukhari and Muslim] except for this Walid, and I think he is Walid bin Abu Walid Shami, that is, Walid bin Abdullah, for his father's kunya became predominant over his name. If that is the case, then Muslim relied upon him." End of quote.Dhahabi said in his Talkhis, "If Walid is Ibn Abu Walid Shami, then he meets the standard of Muslim."I say, this is what both of them stated, but the correct view is that he is Walid bin Abdullah bin Abu Mughith Abdari, their client, of Makkah, as Abu Dawud traced his lineage, and he is among his narrators. Ibn Majah also reported from him, and he is trustworthy, having been declared trustworthy by Ibn Main and others.As for Walid bin Abu Walid Shami, no one bears this name at all, let alone being among Muslim's narrators. The one from whom Muslim narrated is Walid bin Abu Walid Madani, not Shami as Hakim stated, unless one of the narrators mistakenly attributed him to Sham. Also, his father's name is Uthman, not Abdullah.
